I almost cancelled that evening. Tired week, long day, was fully prepared to just order in and call it a night. A friend insisted and I gave in reluctantly. Walked into Royal China on Lavelle Road in the worst possible mood and somewhere between being seated and the first bite of the Glutinous Rice Steamed in Lotus Leaf something just shifted. There is no dramatic way to say this, the food genuinely turned my evening around. The lotus leaf gives the rice this faint floral earthiness that you cannot replicate any other way. Subtle and ancient feeling somehow. The resto was calm, the lighting was doing everything right, and by the time we asked for the bill I had completely forgotten what I was so tired about. Some places just have that effect on you.

There is a particular joy in discovering that a restaurant you loved six months ago is just as good when you return. Went back to Royal China last weekend half expecting the novelty to have worn off. Ordered the Chicken and Water Chestnut in Black Pepper Sauce and it was just as precise and satisfying as I remembered. The water chestnut gives it this lovely crunch that breaks up the richness of the sauce beautifully. The room was buzzing but our table felt completely private somehow. That is a hard thing to achieve and they make it look effortless. Some restaurants peak early. This one just stays consistent and that is honestly more impressive.

My grandmother used to say that you can tell everything about a kitchen by how it handles the simple things. She was a tough critic and I think about her every time I eat somewhere that genuinely impresses me. Ordered the Steamed Fish Cantonese Style at Royal China last week and I kept thinking she would have approved. No heavy sauces trying to cover anything up, just clean, honest flavors that trusted the ingredient completely. The fish was flawless. The space on Lavelle Road has this quiet confidence to it, nothing is trying too hard, everything is just right. The kind of restaurant that does not need to announce itself.

Did not plan on ordering the Wok Seared Tenderloin with Truffle Oil but the waiter mentioned it so casually and so confidently that it felt like the obvious choice. Arrived on a hot plate, fragrant, beautifully seared, the kind of dish that makes the whole table go quiet for a moment. Royal China on Lavelle Road has this ability to make a regular weeknight dinner feel like an occasion without any pretension. The crowd is interesting, the lighting is perfect, the staff are sharp without being stiff. Genuinely one of the better evenings I have had in Bangalore this year.

Our team had a small celebration dinner last month and someone suggested Royal China and I am so glad they did. We ordered the Crispy Skin Duck, the Kung Pao Tenderloin with Cashew Nuts and a few other things to share. Every dish came out at the right time, right temperature, nothing felt rushed. The Kung Pao especially was outstanding, real depth in the sauce, perfect crunch on the cashews. The restaurant has this refined but never cold energy about it. By the end of the night everyone was already talking about coming back. That really says it all.

My partner is extremely hard to impress when it comes to food. Years of eating out together has taught me to manage expectations carefully. Took her to Royal China for her birthday, ordered the Dimsums to start and the Stir Fried Lobster for mains. She did not say much through the meal which in our relationship means she is fully absorbed in what she is eating. On the way out she said we should come back next month. Honestly that felt better than any five star review I could read. Royal China on Lavelle Road just has a way of doing that to people.

Took a client here last week, someone who travels constantly and eats at some of the finest restaurants in the world. Was a little nervous honestly. We ordered the Stir Fried Lobster and watched him eat in silence, which with him is always a good sign. At the end he leaned back and said the Cantonese cooking here was more authentic than places he had visited in Hong Kong. I did not say anything but internally I was very pleased with myself for picking Royal China. Lavelle Road delivers again.

Been to a lot of Chinese restaurants across the country but Royal China sits in a different league altogether. Visited last Thursday, quiet dinner for one, ordered the Wok Tossed Tenderloin in Fermented Black Bean Sauce and it was exactly what I needed. Bold, deeply savory, with a heat that builds slowly rather than hits you upfront. What struck me equally was the service, the staff read the room beautifully, no unnecessary check ins, no forced conversation. Just calm, considered hospitality.
