Six Ballygange Place is an iconic Bengali restaurant that’s been delighting us for years—and the food just keeps getting better! My absolute favorites are the melt-in-your-mouth Fish Paturi and the perfectly balanced Shukto; every bite feels like home. The warm welcome from Mr. Debabrata was unforgettable—he handled our customized order of multiple small portions with such care and a genuine smile. Service is top-notch throughout, and the thoughtfully decorated ambience in this stunning old Bengali bungalow feels straight out of a classic film. As they say, reality here outshines fiction! Huge thanks to Ankush for organizing our lovely lunch. We’ll be back soon!

The restaurant has a wide variety of items to choose from. The taste of the dishes was good with a decent portion size and the service was good too. The space was a bit tight and the price on the higher side but still it was a good experience.

Ever since I landed in Kolkata, I’ve been having great food—whether at home or outside. Since I had already tried biryani and continental, my local friend suggested we explore Bengali cuisine next. From a list of options, I chose 6 Ballygunge Place—drawn by its authenticity, legacy, and, admittedly, its unpronounceable name for a non-native speaker. We had to catch a bus from Kalighat Temple to get there, and were dropped off at a random location where no one seemed to know about the restaurant. It’s quite a posh place—so I probably asked the wrong people. But the walk turned out to be enjoyable, as it was the first time we explored a residential neighborhood in Kolkata. Credit to my friend, who didn’t complain even once about all the walking we did across the city. We were starving, and after the crowd and chaos at Kalighat Temple, all we wanted was to relax in a nice place. On the way, we spotted a couple of other appealing restaurants, which briefly put me in a dilemma—should we stick to the plan or try something else? But I knew I wouldn’t change my mind once I had decided on a place. The restaurant was super chic, and we got a great table. By the time I returned from the washroom, my friend had already decided to go for the buffet, tempted by the variety of dishes. I agreed—it felt like the smarter choice, saving us the trouble of picking from an à la carte menu. At ₹1,500 per person, it seemed reasonable too. The only slight disappointment was that the Zomato credits I had earned during my Peter Cat visit couldn’t be used, as the restaurant clearly didn’t accept Zomato payments for the buffet. Still, being new to the city, everything felt exciting. Now, let me talk about the food: Gondhoraj Ghol – A sweet and spicy take on lassi. I loved it so much that I had two full glasses. Loochi – The Bengali version of Poori. At first glance, I actually thought it was Pappadam! Begun Bhaja – Pan-fried brinjal (eggplant). I initially mistook it for fish fry, but it turned out to be delicious. Saag Bhaja – Some kind of sautéed greens—I’m not sure which, but it tasted great. Sheem Aloo Bhorta – A mashed potato-based dish. I don’t quite remember the taste, but it was decent. Steamed Rice – The usual staple. Gobindobhoger Basmati Pulao – Easily the best rice dish I had in Kolkata. It was incredibly aromatic and flavorful, complementing every side dish perfectly. Honestly, it could stand alone as a dish. Fish Chop – Can Bengalis ever go wrong with fish? It was good, though not as memorable as the fish fry I had at D Bapi. Chhol Macher Muitha – A fish gravy I wasn’t familiar with, but I really enjoyed it. I especially loved how well the fish was fried before being added to the curry. Chingri Malai Curry – The dish of the trip. “Eclectic” is the word. Paired with the Gobindobhoger Pulao, it was pure foodgasm. Kosha Murgi – A tangy and flavorful chicken curry. Mutton Dakbunglow – Not my favorite, mainly because of the fatty pieces. Chutney – A sweet chutney served post-meal and pre-dessert, usually with papad. A unique cultural experience. Papod Bhaja – Papad. Simple and familiar. I skipped desserts, but staples like mishti doi, sondesh, and rosogolla were available in abundance to round off the meal. Overall, it was a terrific experience. I would have given it a straight 5/5, but there was a small hiccup at the very end—the waiter’s attitude when I asked him to refill my water bottle wasn’t great. He missed out on a tip, and the restaurant missed out on a star. Still, I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone visiting Kolkata.

Buffet was not available whereas we booked only because it showed that buffet was available. Updates should be mentioned properly from time to time.

We ordered fish fry and mutton chop which were superb. However we were dissapointed with the tel koi, prawn bhuna and basanti polao. Both tel koi and prawn bhuna preparations were absoluely not upto the mark. The basanto polao was prepared with basmati rice instead of Gobindo bhog rice which was absolutely dissapointing. To summarise, the starters were excellent but the main course had failed miserably.

6BLPL is robbing and looting ppl. The decor is some 28 year old. The food in 80% xases are stale stale and stale. Buffet price is very very high having no freshness or quality. The paturi is hard to chew and also not descaled. The prawn was not descaled. We wonder how this place can be so much hyped. So reputed but so low quality. All reviews are excessively curated and sweet worded and mostly trom local guides which are clearly fake. All the balance review are clearly genuine and nobody appreciated . Neither Mr Ramani nor that Partner Susanta and Chef has a little consideration to go to kitchen to see whats happening in raw material procurement and inside kitchen activities, in quality cooking or chef work . The bosses has become complacent and just counting money . Rajeev has now become doctorate. Befooling people for outdoor catering services and special quality in Plate counting technology and openly eating by contract employees before the guests could finish. They are busy to get plate counting signature which disappears very fast and beyond cctv reach
