I love Kolkata biryani—especially the Aloo in it. It’s a statement that has always earned me frowns from my biryani-loving friends. But whenever I got the chance at my first office, that would be my second favorite biryani. The first would always be the masala-clad Asian Kitchen biryani. So, on the day we landed in Kolkata, one of our local friends took us to a place called D Bapi Biryani. I hadn’t done much research about food in Kolkata apart from Peter Cat, so I didn’t have many expectations. But as every travel book says, no matter how much you research, always go with locals’ recommendations. And that’s how we ended up at D Bapi Biryani for their signature mutton biryani. I was told they originally had a mutton shop that was quite famous, but their biryani became even more popular—so much so that they shifted their focus to it. Within minutes, I knew why. Before eating, I had to wait outside for a few minutes for the others to arrive. It was one of the most teasing waits ever—the aroma was literally pulling me inside by my collar. Once we got a seat, the quantity of biryani made two of us decide to share a plate. When we ordered the mutton biryani, we were asked whether we wanted it with fat or without. I, of course, chose without. One of the best parts of the experience was that as soon as we got our plates, the waiter used a fork to lift the mutton piece and show it to us, asking if we were satisfied. Seeing the sheer size of it, I was more than satisfied. The taste was phenomenal too. I finished my portion in no time—and honestly, I could have eaten the entire plate despite how huge it was. We also ordered a fish fry made with bhetki, which my friend told me is a premium fish. I also learned that in Kolkata, “fish fry” usually means a boneless fillet—which was the icing on the cake. After finishing the meal, standing there again and inhaling that aroma made me relive the entire experience in my head. Oh, Calcutta—what a welcome.

Spent a lovely Sunday afternoon at the new Sodepur outlet of D Bapi, and let's jump straight into the food review! First up, I ordered the special mutton biryani priced at INR 600. The mutton was cooked to perfection—soft and juicy. The rice had the perfect balance of garam masala flavors without being overpowering. The biryani wasn't oily at all, which made it even better. Next, I tried their famous mutton liver curry, priced at INR 200. The black gravy, made with black spice powder and green chilies, complemented the liver perfectly. The liver was tender and flavorful, with no raw taste—absolutely spot-on! To accompany the biryani and liver curry, I ordered a soda sikanji for INR 70, which was refreshing. Finally, I ended my meal with a delicious firni for dessert, priced at INR 70. It was creamy with a touch of kesar and nuts—simply delightful. Overall, dining at D Bapi was a great experience! Highly recommended.

An absolute gem in Barrackpore for biryani lovers. The mutton biryani was delicately spiced, with melt-in-the-mouth meat and fragrant rice. The fish fry was crisp and perfectly seasoned, while the mutton liver kosha was rich and deeply flavorful. The mutton keema was indulgent, well-balanced, and beautifully cooked. The interior is clean, tastefully done and adds to the overall dining experience. Exceptional quality and superb value — a standout culinary experience!!

My husband being an ardent lover of Dadaboudi, convincing him to visit D Bapi was a task! On the poila baisakh evening, we visited this restaurant for the first time. To our surprise, the dine in section was almost empty at around 8PM. We had ordered a special mutton biryani, chicken kasha and jeera soda. The first thing that we disliked was, they do not have any starters in their menu. The rice was flavourful and tasted much like the "Barrackporian style" - spicy with huge chunk of mutton and aloo. But to our disappointment, both the mutton pieces were largely fat with very little meat. chicken kasha was good. The ambience is bad- ACs were on but it was hot, there were no spoons or napkins kept on the table. There is still a long way left for this outlet of biryani to transform into a proper restaurant.

Today i oder mutton biriyani from this restaurant it was awful. I don’t like the fat piece of a mutton, so I requested to the restaurant and the delivery partner to provide me a solid piece of mutton. Instead of that, whatever the piece they provided, I can’t even eat that I am asking if I’m paying so much of amount for this specific food, why can’t they provide the thing which we ask for?

Only the size of the mutton is okay , the rice is the worst in Barrackpore , I’ve had biriyani from nearly everywhere, the rice tastes like plain ghee and white rice mixed together 🤣
