The food was decent with a few good dishes, though not everything stood out. Flavors were mild compared to authentic Chinese taste, and some items felt a bit oily. Service was okay, not too fast but polite. Ambience is simple and fine for a casual meal. Overall, an average experience—good if you’re nearby and craving Chinese, but not something I’d go out of the way for.

My favourite restaurant in China Town. Love their Mixed Fried Rice and the green chutney they serve on table. The food and ambiance at this restaurant were decent. The guard repeatedly asked for tips stayed behind us until we left. While I understand tipping is customary, it should be voluntary and not requested multiple times.

We visited Kim Ling Restaurant in Tangra for a Sunday dinner. It’s a well-known and popular spot in the area, often bustling with diners. For our meal, we ordered: 🔺Chicken Mushroom Soup (Thick) 🔺Chilli Garlic Pepper Chicken 🔺Schezwan Drums of Heaven (This dish wasn’t listed on the menu; we requested it personally.) Each and every dish was absolutely delicious. The flavors were well-balanced, and the food was served hot and fresh. We thoroughly enjoyed every item. The staff were well-behaved and the service was good, but we did find their persistent nagging for tips a bit inappropriate, especially for a restaurant of such repute. While the prices were slightly on the higher side, the overall dining experience was enjoyable and the food quality made it worth it.

Kim Ling is a well-known name in Chinatown, ranking just after Golden Joy and Big Boss. While slightly more affordable than its competitors, it still leans toward the pricier side, especially considering the basic ambiance. For reference, chicken dishes start at Rs. 500, and fish dishes begin at Rs. 800 for a full portion. However, there’s an odd policy to note: if you're visiting with only male companions, you’ll be restricted to a separate dining area at back, which isn’t as comfortable or inviting as the main dining room. During our visit, we ordered two simple dishes for lunch: Chicken Cantonese Rice @ Rs.275 (3/5) Chilli Garlic Pepper Chicken @ Rs. 315 (2/5) ------------------------------------------------------ The Cantonese Rice was mild, as expected, with a decent amount of chicken pieces but very few vegetables. The portion size was adequate for two people. The Chilli Garlic Pepper Chicken had been fried in burnt oil, which gave it a blackened texture and an unpleasant, smoky flavor. The chicken pieces were incredibly small, almost like chicken chunks that didn’t even fill a spoon. Overall, the food was quite ordinary—nothing special at all. Additionally, there's an uncomfortable trend. Some rich NRIs have come back to India and spread the US tipping culture here. As a result, the staff aggressively ask for tips, and even the guard outside asks for tips as well. Being a moderately expensive restaurant, they don’t even accept small tips and instead insult customers, as mentioned in other reviews. This is such a shameful gesture toward customers. It's disappointing to see that tipping is expected just for delivering 2 food items from the counter to your table. It’s a shameful practice and one that left a sour taste in our experience. Considering the mediocre food and the pressure to tip, I have no intention of returning.

Kimling - A very old name in the china town area. But i would want to mention that they have detoriated in their food a lot While service was never there The waiters will not entertain you and will ask for tips at the end . If u don’t give , they will even force you to give them tips . Owners were never bothered to give this a note . As this area has a monopoly on the food scene of Kolkata. . But slowly they are looosing their customers Due to huge downfall of quality of food . Extremely overpriced , wrong , stale and rotten food served specially when u take parcel . I warn everyone beware to take delivery or parcel orders as they only give bad and wrong items in their parcel and above all when told doesn’t even recognise you for that. A very below average . Once a great spot , now a detoriated , hopeless and slowly degrading restaurant. A serious no for anyone ,

We visited Kim Ling for a takeaway, but had a very disappointing experience. The waiter, Richard, was extremely rude and spoke disrespectfully. On top of that, our order was taken incorrectly. We have ordered 2 types drums of heaven “Despite correcting one dish, the other item we received was also wrong. Instead of Drums of Heaven, we were given Chicken Lollipop. While taking the order, he acted sincere and assured us of any mistake, yet he still made errors in the order. clearly reflects poor service and lack of attention. Bill Value -3k

It used to be one of my go to places back in the times. After having food all over the globe as a journalist in different countries with an international news agency and returning to Calcutta, i took my parents to kim ling in october 2025 - we were not entertained by any of the waiters or the managers because they were senior citizens and apparently didn’t look fashionable/ elegant.
