About the place

Condé Nast Traveller's choice: A 12-seat Bandra attic where chef Hussain Shahzad riffs wildly on India-inspired food and drink.

Why people go

Feels less like a restaurant and more like a secret party with outrageous food, with the rotating 12-course menu: think nihari lamb pie or the famed Bugs Bunny.

Legacy and reputation

Chef Hussain Shahzad (ex-Eleven Madison Park) runs the counter like a mischievous maestro of flavour.

Easily one of the best meals I've had in my life. The staff was warm, kept us comfortable and provided us great service. I had a belly full of smiles and an experience totally worth every penny. Thank you Chef Hussain, Madhu and team Papa's.

Totally worth the hype. For me, it definitely is the most unique food experience in India right now. From the team, to the story telling to the food and service - everything was so fun. Our three hours genuinely just flew. There so much attention to detail to everything but it was still un-serious! We loved the space and yes, it took some effort to nab the reservation but yes, would do it again!

Banger place. Worth all the bloody wait. Some of the best food I’ve had ever. And service too.

I’ve been trying to get a reservation for months now- I’ve been online since 10:55 AM, and the second slots were online everything was sold out. It took me 10 seconds to select a slot and proceed to make payment, but within that time everything sold out, how is that possible? Last month as well I got a table - which was subsequently cancelled because the restaurant overbooked.

This is Bombay’s best restaurant. It’s worth the wait and the effort - if you don’t get it the first time, keep trying. Madhu and Aksha are the best hosts - they’re so warm that it feels like you’ve stepped into their home. Hussain & his culinary team do magic with food and feed you like the Christmas goose that you shouldn’t be, but probably are. Harish & Kartika specifically, and Hunger Inc in general, has ruined cocktails for me for everywhere. Pro tip: get the Paloma. There’s enough salt (aka electrolytes) in there that the hangover isn’t so bad the next day. And you’ll remember how good the duck biryani was the next morning. Please drink water.

After a wait of over four months, finally got a table at the twelve seater restaurant, PAPA’S. Thanks to it being a dry day, they had a cancellation and I managed to get a table. Well, it was worth the wait. It’s probably one of the best dining experience one can have. From the moment you enter the restaurant, you feel a lot of warmth from each one of the ten or eleven odd staff. As you enter you are seated at the bar and can have your drinks. We had some nice mock tails. Then you are taken to the main table which seats only twelve guests. Chef Hussain who is at the helm of the affairs gives you a mindblowing experience of a super thirteen course meal. Every dish gives you a taste and flavour like never before. We started of with two tiny starters, the Bebinca inspired by the goanese dessert which had a mixture of black truffles and dates. This was followed by the Chhena Poda which had a tinge of caviar. A super way to start and arouse the pallet. This was followed by the samosa which was tuna. The next item was an interesting one consisting of Trout with watermelon and lime leaf. The fifth item was Thayir Sadam which was their version of curd rice and was simply amazing. Next was their pork char siu Modak. We were then introduced to a corn soup which was very refreshing. The eighth dish was Under the sea which was scallops with jowar and amla. Once again a very unique taste. Apple salad with cherry walnut and celery was their next item. We were now coming to the business end with their two main courses which were obviously meaty dishes. The first was the Lamb Wellington which was the softest meat I have ever had. It was apparently cooked for fourteen hours. This really aroused the taste buds. It was definitely the best dish on the menu. This was followed by their next best, which was What the Duck. This was dry aged and served with Indrayani rice. We now came to the desserts. The first was like an ice cream sandwich toastie made of honey, blue cheese and grape. And finally the curtains were brought down potato chips with lemon truffle and champagne. This was their version of the honey noodle ice cream. The whole experience was two hours and you didn’t want it to end. I would love to go back when they change the menu, but getting a table is a challenge as they are only open for dinner from Wednesday to Sunday. The same group as Bombay Canteen, Veronicas and Oh Pedro. In terms of food and service, nothing comes close. Without doubt their dishes are also the photographer’s delight. It’s a very expensive outing at 8000 per head without alcohol, but well worth it if you are passionate about your food.
