Let me tell you something about Gurugram that rarely gets said plainly enough: it is one of the most culinarily restless cities in India. Not necessarily the most refined — that crown still belongs to Mumbai, and arguably to Delhi's older, more settled neighbourhoods — but restless in a way that is particular to new money and new ambition. It wants to be everywhere at once. It wants the ramen bar and the tapas counter and the Parisian patisserie, all within a five-kilometre radius. Most of the time, this promiscuity produces the predictable: a kitchen that tries everything and masters nothing. Which is why, when a place gets it genuinely right, it deserves more than a passing mention. Fifth Avenue Bakery & Cafe, tucked into the ground floor of 32nd Avenue in Sector 29, gets it right. Not in every department — I'll come to the caveats — but in the one department that matters most: it knows what it wants to be, and it commits. The Idea of the Place There is, among a certain class of Indian food entrepreneurs, an abiding love affair with New York. Not the New York of pastrami sandwiches and egg creams and the original Peter Luger, mind you, but a New York of the imagination — sunlit brownstones, artisanal everything, a coffee cup in one hand and a tote bag in the other. Instagram New York. Pinterest New York. Fifth Avenue leans fully into that fantasy, and I say this without condescension. The pastel teal and peach palette, the plush velvet cushions, the soft light that turns everything slightly cinematic — it is all deliberate, all considered, and in person, it works considerably better than it has any right to. Walking in on a weekend afternoon, I found myself thinking of the word that old-fashioned food writers used to deploy without irony: charming. The place is charming. It is also dog-friendly, which, in a city that has historically been unkind to pet owners seeking a civilised outing, feels almost radical. I noticed a golden retriever occupying a corner with the air of a regular — ears pricked at the sound of the pastry counter, entirely indifferent to everything else. I understood him completely. The staff, it must be said, were genuinely courteous. Not the performative courtesy of a hotel lobby, where helpfulness is a uniform you put on and take off. These were young people who seemed to actually enjoy being there. It made a difference. The Bakery, Which Is the Heart of the Matter I have a test for bakeries that want to be taken seriously: the cheesecake. It is a deceptively simple thing to get wrong. Too dense and it becomes leaden, a slab of sweetened dairy with aspirations. Too light and it loses the structural integrity that is, in fact, the whole point. The Blueberry Cheesecake at Fifth Avenue passed this test without drama — which is, in itself, high praise. The base had the right amount of give; the blueberry compote was tart in a way that saved the whole thing from cloying. The Red Velvet was competent, handsome in the way that red velvet always is, its cream cheese frosting applied with what I can only describe as architectural confidence. Custom cupcakes are a feature of the menu, and the Nutella Love Cupcake — however breathless the name — delivered on its promise with a filling that was generous without being excessive. But the most interesting section of the menu, and the one that made me sit up, is the collection of themed cakes named after luxury houses. The Burberry is a Belgian Chocolate Ganache. The Cartier, rather ambitiously, is a Tiramisu. The Gucci is a Chocolate Truffle. The Versace — and this is the one I would order again without hesitation — is a Baked Philadelphia Cheesecake that understands the word baked as seriously as the label on the tin would suggest. Is there something slightly absurd about naming a cake after a fashion house? Of course. But the absurdity is in the spirit of the place, and besides, the cakes are good enough to survive the nomenclature. Beyond the Pastry Counter Fifth Avenue is, strictly speaking, a cafe as much as a bakery, and its savoury offerings deserve attention. The Philly Cream Cheese Bagel was the dish I was most sceptical about and least disappointed by. Getting a bagel right in India is a minor miracle — the chewy, slightly sour quality that defines a proper New York bagel is notoriously difficult to replicate without the right water, the right fermentation, and a certain institutional knowledge that only comes with practice. This one came close. Closer, at any rate, than most. The Mexican Veg Burger was unapologetically hearty — the kind of thing you order when you have arrived hungry and departed with the specific satisfaction of having eaten more than you planned. The Spaghetti with Chicken Meatballs was straightforward, honest comfort food: the meatballs were well-seasoned and the sauce had cooked long enough to know itself. On the beverage front, the Cappuccino was what a cappuccino should be — milk-forward without being milky, the coffee present but not aggressive. The Brownie Shake was an unambiguous act of indulgence, the sort of thing you either embrace entirely or refuse to engage with at all. I embraced it. What Fifth Avenue Understands Gurugram has no shortage of cafes. It has, if anything, a surplus. What it has rather fewer of are cafes with a point of view — places that have decided, definitively, what they are and then built everything around that decision. Fifth Avenue has decided it is a New York-style premium bakery for a city that wants a little of that particular kind of ease. Open until midnight on most days — until one in the morning on weekends — it occupies that twilight zone between a dessert destination and a third space, the kind of place where a coffee date can drift, almost accidentally, into a full evening. Is it perfect? No. The luxury-brand cake names are a gimmick, and while they get away with it, they are walking a fine line. The savoury menu, while solid, is not the reason to visit. And on a busy weekend, the intimate space can feel less like an oasis and more like a popular destination — which is not the same thing. But perfection is a high bar to set for a neighbourhood cafe, and Fifth Avenue is not trying to be a restaurant or a patisserie of the first rank. It is trying to be the best version of what it is. On most days, it succeeds. On the day I visited, it succeeded. That, in Gurugram's overcrowded cafe landscape, is no small thing.

Visited this place, very poor hygiene, tables weren’t cleaned, crockery wasn’t clean. Ordered the below Cappuccino- tastes like milk and water, coffee was poorly made. For 300 inr not worth the money Bagel pizza- boring old crust, no flavor, tastes stale, a 5 year old can cook something better at home. Costed 400 INR for half a bagel( what a joke). Alfredo chicken pasta- mediocre is the word, you should fire your chef!!

We ordered a cold brew, Vietnamese coffee, and a mocha — unfortunately, all of them were disappointing. The service was extremely slow, taking over 40 minutes just to serve our order. We couldn’t even finish the drinks. Maybe they were short-staffed or didn’t have a proper barista that day, but overall it was a really poor experience. Wouldn’t recommend trying it out.
