In our 3rd Hyderabad lecture, we’re bringing you Pranav Shirhatti, an associate professor at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Hyderabad. His research interests and current work focus on understanding energy exchange in collisions among molecules and metal surfaces, and their implications for understanding chemical reactions occurring on metal surfaces. These studies lie at the fascinating intersection of chemistry and physics.

Pranav will unpack one of the most remarkable journeys undertaken by humankind: the quest for nitrogen capture. As the importance of nitrogen-rich fertilisers emerged in the 19th century, a massive effort began to develop industrial-scale methods to meet the demand. Today, about half of the nitrogen atoms in our bodies come from these sources, but the processes consume 2-4% of the world's total energy production.

About the Lecturer: Pranav Shirhatti is an associate professor at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Hyderabad. His research interests and current work focus on understanding energy exchange in collisions among molecules and metal surfaces, and their implications for understanding chemical reactions occurring on metal surfaces. These studies lie at the fascinating intersection of chemistry and physics involving chemical reactions, ultra-high vacuum surface science techniques, making beams of molecules and high precision laser spectroscopy methods.
