Day 0 – Leave the city life behind
We leave in the early hours of the evening at 8 pm from Bangalore and travel overnight to reach the foothills of Agumbe.
Day 1 – Forests, Waterfalls, and Campfires
Rest, Eat and Shower: Arrive at the homestay, unload your bags, take a shower and grab a bite to eat for breakfast before you leave for the trek base.
Let the trek begin: With your energy renewed and your trekking gear on, head to the trek base and start your journey towards the edge of the Western Ghats until you see water falling from a height of nearly 400 meters and stop to witness the magnificence of the Onake Abbi Waterfalls. The falls derive its name from the word “Onake: which means a large stick that is used to powder food grains. This is because there’s just one branch in the water and it is called “onake.” You will hear the roar of the falls as you trek closer and its picturesque beauty makes for an enriching experience.
Appease those hunger pangs: As your stomach starts to rumble for food, make your way back and feast on the delicious lunch at the homestay.
Game on: Next up is the slush-fest called “Kesaru Gadde” or simply, mud games!
Form a human pyramid to break an earthen pot, splash your way through a tug-of-war win or race your way to the finish line in a gunny bag without slipping!
Be a cave-person: Once you are all cleaned up, you then get to take a nice stroll through the uninhibited limestone caves of Agumbe. These caves are a unique combination of natural elements. The rugged walls of the caves are decorated by a rich cover of green vines and the floors of the caves sometimes hold water from the rain. A quiet evening walk through them is relaxing to the senses.
Fire-it-up: Huddle around the campfire, warm yourself up and enjoy the serenity of being amidst nature.
Time for dinner: Wrap-up an eventful first day in the evergreen forest by having dinner with your fellow trekkers and head to bed!
Day 2 – Sunrise, Jeep rides and Streams
Hill-top Sunrise: Get out of bed and head to Kundadri Hill to witness the sunrise in all its glory before you. Atop the hill is a 17th Century Jain Temple which gave shelter to earlier sages. The Tunga River fills the site to form two small ponds on one side of the temple and provided water to the sages in earlier days. The sunrise from Kundadri offers the best sights in the Western Ghats!
Breakfast: Head back to the homestay, get ready and eat up before you start your second day of adventure!
Trek to Kavaledurga Fort:Near the village of Kavaledurga, around 16 km from town, is a hill fort that has seven water bodies and hence, access to water all year long. We will trek through a trail lined with lush green paddy fields making the journey to the fort pleasant and picturesque. There are 5 entrances to the fort and served well during wars. Remains of old temples, a palace and a wonderful view of the backwaters of the Varahi Dam are what makes this trek particularly special.
Lunch-in: Head back to the homestay and have a good lunch.
Sunset point: Pack up your things and leave the homestay as you head out to watch the sunset from one of the highest points – Agumbe Sunset Point. The rays of the sun cut through the clouds and light up the forest leaves at it sets gracefully against the horizon of the vast Arabian Sea. Your visit to Agumbe is only complete when you’ve seen this panoramic view!
Dine-out: There will be a pit stop for dinner as we travel back towards civilization and the city life. ( Self-sponsored – because you deserve to treat yourself after all that trekking)
Travel through the night: Make yourself comfortable and take a nap, you will be in back in Bangalore by 5 a.m. filled with the satisfaction of having a memorable weekend away!
