Go up for the views, stay for the history, then come back down for a proper meal.

Chamundi Hills is one of those Mysore stops that comes with a little bit of everything: a temple at the top, sweeping city views, a giant Nandi, and enough history to make the climb feel worth it. The hill rises to about 3,489 feet above sea level and the Chamundeshwari Temple has been closely tied to Mysore’s royal history for generations. The important bit to know before planning your food stop? Most of the eating happens after you come back down the hill. So once the temple visit, photos and sightseeing are done, head downhill towards Mysore for everything from coffee and quick bites to proper meals. Think of it as the second half of the Chamundi Hills outing, only considerably more delicious.

Before You Go:Why Chamundi Hills Is Famous: The hill is home to the Chamundeshwari Temple, dedicated to Goddess Chamundeshwari, who is traditionally believed to have defeated the buffalo demon Mahishasura here. The legend is also tied to Mysore’s name, which comes from Mahishuru or Mahishasura’s town.A Little Royal History: Chamundeshwari has long been the titular deity of the Mysore royal family. The Wodeyars added to and patronised the temple over the years, including the grand gopura associated with Krishnaraja Wodeyar III.The Famous Nandi: About partway up the hill sits the enormous monolithic Nandi, measuring around 16 feet high at the front and 25 feet long. It is one of the landmarks you will want to stop for before continuing uphill.Download the District App to reserve your table, unlock exclusive offers, and discover your next favourite spot
