About the Event

Dastangoi, the extraordinary art of storytelling, found its origin a thousand years ago in Persia. The early dastangois told tales of magic, war and adventure, and borrowed freely from other stories such as the Arabian Nights, storytellers such as Rumi, and storytelling traditions such as the Panchatantra.

The Potbelly is back again with another evening where you can be a part of this unique form of storytelling and step into the world of Urdu stories.

This time watch Dastan Ghummi Kebab Ki.

“Ghummi kebabi ko kaun nahin jaanta? Sara sheher jaanta hai!”

People flock around Ghummi to eat his mouth-watering kebabs and savour his equally flavorful Urdu. Packed with idioms, proverbs and polite curses, Ghummi’s cutting-edge comments are as sharp as his skewers. When Ashraf sahib hires Ghummi to make kebabs for a group of highly-educated rascals from Aligarh, the stage is set for a conflict packed with finger-licking fun. Adapted from Ashraf Subuhi Dehelvi’s Dilli Ki Chand Ajeeb Hastiyan, this dastan creates an intimate portrait of Old Delhi and its language in the 1930s.
