Kaylir Canteen in Mylapore is a wonderful place for anyone who enjoys simple, homely and delicious South Indian food. The dishes here taste fresh, comforting and remind you of a good home-cooked meal. The ambiance is calm, clean and welcoming, with a pleasant mix of indoor and outdoor seating. The staff are friendly, polite and make the experience even better with their warm attitude. The self-service style adds to the canteen’s charm and gives the place a relaxed, community feel. Prices are reasonable for the quality of food served, and the menu changes often, which keeps every visit interesting. Overall, Kaylir Canteen is a must-try spot in Mylapore for anyone looking for tasty vegetarian food served with love. Highly recommended.

We went for lunch here and the meals tasted great and almost like home food. There were limited items but everything tasted great. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Special mention to the service provided here. Everyone served with smile and they were very courteous. Must visit if you are around Mylapore or Alwarpet for lunch.

Great food and service! Have become a regular here and this is not just a restaurant. People working here come from all walks of life, and yet their service is down to earth. Pleasing ambience.

Visited Kaylir today and I must say I used to love this place but today I had the worstttt experience ever. The Mysore Masala Dosa which I ordered was horrible. The quality has gone down and to my assumption they must have added raw chilli paste and the food which I had today has literally given me food poisoning! Never did I expect Kaylir would do this. Also the taste of the food that we ordered has changed a lot. Hope you work on maintaining the standard of the canteen for your genuine customers. Thank you!

16th November 2025 - I wanted to grab a quick lunch after my swim session and something vegetarian. So having been to kaylir a handful of times and i love the vibe of this place, i decided to have my lunch here. Valet parking was smooth, i was immediately allocated a table as soon as i arrived though it was crowded. Was informed it was a special lunch menu today, i happily agreed. Here comes the show downer’s, the service was poor. Basically the place was filled with ppl on a sunday afternoon and the place is poorly staffed or either they aren’t trained to handle crowd. The staff are regular staff’s of kaylir and not volunteers they use to have in initial days. I literally had to ask the service person multiple times just to serve my first serving of rice. I asked paruppu podi and ghee, they said they have only sambar, rasam and kara kozhumbu. Later gave me ghee but they were serving podi to other tables. Was served a cup of payasam, vazhapoo vada, sweet bonda type, a green poori, 4 types of poriyal, sambar, rasam, kara kozhambu, papads. All this items i had to ask the staff multiple times to serve. There were curd rice, puliogarai ( if i m right) on the menu, my next table folks were asking for yam fry repeatedly before it was served to them. This items were never served to me. I asked for butter milk at the end, they promptly told me it’s chargeable and i obliged. When i came out to pay the bill, i was charged 520 for the lunch and 66 for butter milk. When i checked their menu, some of the items never made it to my table. Felt like a daylight robbery. I had respect for this place and the people who come here. So i just informed my concern to the guy in the billing counter which went into deaf ears. 520 for a meal is too much priced, jus because you run a place in CIT colony and i’m ok to pay more than for a meal provide i’m served whats been listed in the menu with basic service etiquette and i don’t require to request multiple times for a first serving of rice. Kaylir you had a vibe and i think you last it today.

Had a very bad experience at dinner. We had ordered for idly, Mysore masal dosa, noodle soup, cocktail idly, veg manchurian, dahi papdi chaat, ghee roast, adai Avial, boiled peanut ( which we returned back as it was not well cooked, needs to be boiled more… was not soft enough) except for dosa all the other items very served cold… it was not even warm… idly felt so dry on top and was hard. the dosa texture was horrible… not crispy… it was sooo soggy… not up to the mark at all… the sambar was so thick… adai Avial needs to have better flavour… it was too bland and less flavourful. Veg ball manchurian was also bland n needs more flavour. It was too big that the manchurian flavour was not enough for the veg ball, Center part was bland. Cocktail idly tased good but was served cold. The only think which was nice was the Dahi Papdi Chaat. To the owners… Pls be a bit more aware of how the food is being Served and pls make sure it is served hot and with good taste.

we were looking forward to the visit after great reviews. Just when we were trying to enjoy the food, there were rats roaming in the outdoor area. it was off putting to see it because we were really excited to visit this place. please do something to address the rat situation.
