Southern Spice at Taj Coromandel, Nungambakkam Chennai was one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in last few months. I had Tamil style Fish Thali (Fish Meals) which was cooked to perfection 💛 Classical instrumental music in the background and Servers dressed in traditional attire. Welcome Platter has Fried Lotus Stem which was the best on the platter. Thali had 1. Lady Fish Fry 2. Crab Meat Thokku 3. King Prawns Masala 4. Meenu Kozhambu (Fish curry) 6. Vendaka (Bhindi) Crisp Fry 7. Avial 8. Mix veg masala 9. Sambar 10. Iddiyappam, Appam, Parotta, Steam rice 11. Arsi payasam Fresh Strawberry 🍓 Ice was heavenly, Filter coffee was authentic and strong 💛 It was Rs3000+ for the fish Thali but it was perfect in every way.

Southern Spice has become my absolute go-to spot, and the biggest reason is Raj. Every visit feels like coming home. The way he treats us is not just professional, but personal, like a brother. He has a rare gift for making guests feel special, and somehow always convinces us to eat like happy kids, enjoying every bite! Raj is truly one of the best staff members Taj can proudly stand by. His warmth, attentiveness, and consistent hospitality make him a priceless asset to the organisation. Thank you, Raj, for always going above and beyond. You make every visit memorable.

Had such a wonderful experience at Southern Spice at Taj Coromandel! The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. We tried the fish thali as well as the fish and chicken dishes, and every single item was rich in flavor and perfectly cooked. A special mention to Shafi for his exceptional service—he was incredibly attentive, warm, and made sure we had a seamless dining experience throughout. Highly recommend this place if you’re looking for authentic South Indian cuisine with great hospitality!

To start it is once must visit place , to be honest Taj could do the menu much much better for the price and for name of restaurant. Serving a Veg thali with Parotta, idiyappam with just one kurma , just 1 potato side dish, and rest normal food and charging at price of 4k is too much. They could bring in lots of variety to it. Non Veg Thali without chikcken or Mutton kulambu was like whats it. Just 2 sides and no Starters is like what world are they in still when small time speciality resturants have changed so much. TAJ is a brand would like to see it more dynamic and young and not to fall as old group.

It was a special day to visit Taj and it was Southern Spice where we went to celebrate our day. Happened to choose the veg virundhu which consisted of 4 starters, 4 main courses followed by rice, biriyani, and desserts which were all unlimited and served on a silver platter. For palate cleansers, we had onion vathal, lotus stem vathal, and rice papads with 4 different chutneys. It was pretty weird to see them explain VATHAL in different jargon. Tasted good with not much oil after-taste. Next up was tomato rasam which was sweeter than spicy; with hints of garlic and hing, which was good on the tummy. 🫠 For starters, it was okra fry; the coating on the okra could've been less and would have also been fried a little longer, a bit dry. 😑 It was soft Paniyaram, crispy paruppu vadai, mild-sweet Unniyappam, and a dry Adai which were lined up as starters. Upon tasting every one of them, you would feel like everything tastes like home-cooked food. That is the USP of this place. 🤗 Next was the main course thali which had Sambar, Kara kozhambu, Potato fry, Kurma, avial with Barotta and idiyappam. For some reason the barotta was hard and I had a tough time with it. The gravies were all top-notch notch with nothing going out of proportion on both spice and salt levels. The potato fry with the curd rice was heavenly. Their rich veg biryani with the raita and appalam was something that I'd munch on every day (unfortunately TUMMY FULL). 🤭 For desserts, it was coffee ice cream, elaneer payasam, and Ada Pradhaman. Me being a sweet tooth, I had no complaints about any of them. The ice cream was the best dessert of them all since it was all smooth and the kicky aroma was WOW!! 🥰 Elaneer payasam was fragrant from the cardamom, and cold and chunky from the coconut. Ada Pradaman was too sweet but the taste of the ghee, rice, and jaggery made it very appealing. 😍 To sum up the meal, there was a chocolate cake on the house to make our day even more special. Kudos to that!! 🤩 Located inside the Taj Coromandel, this place has valet parking and as you enter you can enjoy the vivid motifs all across. Table booking is recommended for Southern Spice but walk-ins are available on any weekday. The landscape of this place is designed in such a way that you'd be in awe as you look around their walls, ceilings, tables, etc. A vast seating space, beautiful colors, and a very peaceful environment. The service was a tad bit slow but on the whole, the experience was surreal since it was Taj and the food legacy that they carry was astonishing. Once the bill arrived all I could do was gasp for breath since never in my whole life have I paid such an amount for whatever we were served. All said and done about their culinary experience, their impeccable service, and their embellishments, a 5-digit bill for a meal for 2? Freaking expensive and not worth it. It was unbelievable that such luxury hotels conveniently charge an unimaginable amount citing their service.

Known for the southern delicacies and beautiful ambiance , my childhood favourite restaurant was Southern Spice. It’s been ages since I dined here so went with my friend for lunch . Good service Great ambiance But the quality of the food was very very poor, ordered one non veg thali, parotta and Manglore ghee roast. The moment I had the chicken I knew something was off it had the raw smell, was actually stinking and I told my friend as well and she had a taste too and felt the same the parottas wer so hard over crispy like the complimentary applams and it didn’t taste anything like a Malabar Parotta which they told me it is when I specifically enquired. Over the time it became more hard impossible to even eat, well the staff was sweet enough to notice and asked me if I’ll have a fresh hot one I refused because I lost appetite cuz of the nasty chicken smell. For a star category hotel like TAJ I never expected this. As the portion was too much we packed it and gave a taste to our peeps, everyone agreed the chicken was raw , it may also be old and TBH they never believed it was from SS!! The wort part was I got sick and I puked twice in the evening and I had to visit my doctor. We were also charged for the desserts which we thought that’s included in thali as it used to be previously, we weren’t notified about this only while checking the invoice we asked about it and they told us it’s not included. Spending a bomb on a meal at the most famous spot of the city just to fall sick ! This is the most worst experience I ever had at a star Hotel especially a brand that holds strong reputation, hate to compare but other chettinad / south cuisine restaurants offer some better quality and hygienic food Very disappointed with this experience.

Visited this restaurant on June 28. Came away extremely disappointed. The waiter at our table was busy and preoccupied serving another large group seated adjacent to our table. The drinks menu took 15 minutes to arrive and I had to remind the wait staff four times before I could get a drinks menu. The waiter seemed overwhelmed and busy with too much to handle. Appams came long after the main course was placed on the table. Dishes ordered in consultation with the Chef were underwhelming. Overall a not-so-great experience. Oh and by the way, I was visiting the restaurant one year and my experience in June 2024 was significantly degraded compared to my experience at the same place in June 2023. Huge decline in the span of a year. Will think twice about patronizing dining outlets at the Taj Coromandel.

I've never had a worse experience in any hotel ever, not just Taj. Nobody listens. We kept on waiting to place an order for drinks - the bartender came after the food arrived. Then it took another half an hour to get the drinks - which ended up being the wrong ones. We ordered cocktails with fresh juice - got canned juice. Dinner wasn't served by any of the stewards. Repeat breads took 35 minutes to come when the rest of the food had gotten cold. Horrible horrible experience. If you are looking for a good time to relax and enjoy Taj's luxury and hospitality, not the place to visit.

The quality of the good served here is pathetic. For 2 , they charged 12000 which is unimaginable. The fish finger they served smells rotten & the old fish is served. The good safety officers have to check their kitchen. They serve old food. I suspect, they repeat the buffet dishes for the next day alacartie. This restaurant is not at all eatable.
