Today I want to share one of the best experiences I had in Kochi (my hometown) when I visited Kochi for Muziris Biennale. I had an opportunity to visit the most popular toddy shop - Mullapanthal Restaurant (Toddy shop/Shaap) in Tripunithura which is very close to my home. This was my first ever visit to a family-friendly toddy shop. The visit to this place was worth all the hype I've been hearing from ages. Mulla means Jasmine and panthal is pent/shed; exactly what you will be welcomed when you reach this place - a jasmine canopy at the entrance. They serve local brew (Coconut toddy) with all traditional fish and meat dishes. The highlight of this place is that you will see a group of ladies in the kitchen preparing all the alluring dishes. The main Chef Radhamma is working there for 30+ years. Due to time constrain I visited this place for lunch soon after a late breakfast, so couldn't savor most of the popular dishes. I enjoyed a glass of Toddy with Konju (Prawns) roast, Kozhuva (anchovy) fry, kappa (Tapioca), and Vatta (Trevally fish) curry. Their fish head curry is so popular. The place was so packed with the family crowd and I am glad I was lucky to visit this toddy shop. If you ever get a chance to travel to Kochi, include Mullapanthal Toddy Shop in your itinerary, I bet it will be a treat to your taste buds.

A fantastic down-to-earth eating place in an out of the way part of Kochi called Tripunithura, about 45 minutes beautiful drive from Willingdon Island, through a quaint countryside, with manageable traffic. What strikes out the moment you enter is the place is the respect and regard for the fairer sex, for fellow human beings, the care and friendly attitude of the hotel staff and patrons. We ordered their big prawn(lobster really), squid, crab, small fish(tiny ones which can be chewed and eaten) and chicken dishes, as well as some appam and puttu to go with. There is a dhaba flavour to their dishes, not the best in the world, but definitely worth a try. What really tilts the balance is their toddy, a mild sweet and sour aromatic tinge in its flavour, a delectable drink at mid day, a bit akin to cider and a lot better than all the wines of the world. And the owner graciously welcomed us to have a look at their kitchen, which uses firewood and no gas and employs elderly ladies as chefs. It's a place with a difference! A must visit.

Too overhyped.. the experience has deteriorated over the years. This was my 3rd visit and probably the last visit. The washroom stink came till the dining area. Very hot inside the restaurant even during the evening time

First of all the place only accept cash, all the items were over priced for the quality, quantity and taste. The places is not hygienic at all and the service is the worst. Only the toddy was good.
