I had the chilli pork dry and their renowned Mutton Afghani. Both the dishes were amazing and very well prepared. A great experience overall.

Lunch on 5th August; ordered chicken soup, fish fry, mutton cutlet and dry boneless chilli chicken. Everything was as expected, fish fry crumb was possibly bit old; apart from that food was pretty good and more than value for money. The chicken soup was surprisingly good. Good place to have a quiet lunch; definitely there is a nostalgic feel to the place.

One of the oldest cafés of South Kolkata running since almost 70 years, this place has those beautiful cabin style seating arrangements. We tried their signature dish Chicken Afghani. It had a sweet unusual vegetable gravy which I didn't like much. Along with this, we had Fish Finger which they served with compulsory salad and kashundi.

Sangu valley is quite a famous name in South Kolkata, owing to its 70 year old cabin style ambience & lipsmacking delicacies. Having in mind the notion of indulging in the nostalgia of devouring snacks in a cabin style arrangement, we decided to head towards it. There are several sections, they have preserved the old cabins as well, but we were a group of five, hence the cabins were too small to accomodate us. As a result, we shifted to the freshly inaugaurated front section with a touch of modernization. For the starters, we'd ordered for Chicken and fish kabiraji, which were served with a generous amount of salad, papad & kasundi. The fish served wasn't the best, but the dish was soft & fresh. I'm not a huge fan of kabiraji but I wanted to have it since a long time. It was average. Next, we chose a veg combo, special chowmein, prawn & chicken noodles and schezwan mixed chowmein. Each of them was served with different sauces, ingredients & toppings. The spicy, hot Schezwan chowmein made my day! Happy hearts returned home with fond memories after a round of coke. Decor & Ambience: 2.5/5 Hospitality & service: 3/5 Food: 3.5/5 Price: 5/5 Hygiene: 3/5

Came in on a rainy hot summer evening with an old friend on 16th July 2022. Don't expect much out of the ambience as this is an old cabin, they still managed to improve the outer seating part and make it look decent but the innermost seating where you have those cabins are not very well maintained. The marble top tables are getting black, floors eroded with regular footfall and slow fans to make you feel hot in the summer. Coming to the food, we got Veg Fried Rice, Chilli Chicken and a Fish Fry. Veg Fried rice (6/10): Decent quantity, enough for 1 person, but not enough for sharing with another unless you're a light eater. Lacked flavour of the fried rice. Rs 90 Chilli Chicken (8/10): Very Good. Tasty, a bit sweet, soft and fresh chicken and sizes were decent. Gravy was good tok, with some veggies. Fish Fry(7/10): They over-fried it and made it black-ish. Thus, killed the flavour of the fish. They give complimentary papad with the fish fry. Service is a bit slow for the cabin parts as they place is understaffed, but still as per the price, it gets the work done.

Went there with a lot of expectations but very much disappointed. I tried their mutton Afghani which I did not like at all. Their fish fry was below average. It was made using fillets of Bombay bhetki not original bhetki...the only thing I like was their chicken fry which was good...the ambience was one of those old cabin types which I really liked.. Fish fry - 2.5/5 Chicken fry - 4/5 Mutton Afghani - 0.5/5 Paratha - 3/5

🟣 The 'adda' scene of Kolkata is nothing new to us, it is a 'skill' passed on from generation to generation, there is no specific place or time, the adda happens where people gather, that's it. From this adda, there was a meteoric rise in the cabins that placed the people in a closed environment and served food with hot coffee or tea to act as catalyst to their adda. The cabin culture of Kolkata has been down there for decades and one such is Sangu Valley. Located just beside Purna Cinema Hall, this cabin had its fair share of loyal customers, who used to lit up the place with their gossips and laughter. Ruposhi a.k.a Sangu is a river that flows in the south-eastern hilly regions of Chottogram (Chittagong). A resident of Chottogram, named H.P. Barua founded this restaurant or cabin in the year 1945 to commemorate his beautiful memories in Bangladesh. He bought the place with just 11 rupees and started this eatery with Indian and Chinese delectable dishes. Though this plot is in several property related cases, it stood the test of time. Many elegant actors like Chhabi Biswas, Anil Chatterjee, Bhanu Bandopadhay, even our currrent chief minister were regulars at this place. The current successor, Prasun Barua is trying to keep the reputation, this place once had and improving the situation gradually. Ordered from their menu : 🔴 Chicken Afghani Cutlet - Rs. 110 🔴 Fish Kabiraji - Rs. 100 🔴 Chicken Fried Rice - Rs. 120 🔴 Pork Chili Dry - Rs. 170 🟢 The easiest route is to take an exit from Jatin Das Park Metro Station (Gate No. 1 ) take an U-turn and walk straight for 7-10 mins, after crossing Purna Cinema Hall, you will find this eatery on your left or you you can take an exit from Netaji Bhavan Metro Station (Gate No. 2) take a U-turn and walk straight for 7-10 mins, the eatery will be on your right. Nearest landmark : Purna Cinema Hall or Opus Hotel. 🟢 There are 3 seating areas, at the entrance (this one is the most furnished and decorated as compared to the other two), the second on in the middle which is semi-furnished and the last one is the one with cabins. 🟢 Coming to the food : 🟧 Chicken Afghani Cutlet is just like a regular cutlet that you usually find in the cabins, but one of the distinguishing factors is that is served with a gravy with is a bit sweet and tangy and topped with cashew, raisins and potatoes. The quality of the meat is good and the taste is a bit different. 🟧Fish Kabiraji is average, I would say, the battered eggs portion is more and the the fish fillet was not pure and was stuffed with the batter, but taste wise it was not bad, and it is served with a papad. 🟧 Chicken Fried Rice is very light and it was filled with boneless chicken bits and the quantity is good enough for 2 people. 🟧 Pork Chili Dry had a very smoky flavour due to the burnt chilies and onions, and it was semi-dry, I found the taste of the soya sauce a bit overpowering and the meat fat ratio was about 60:40. 🟢 The restaurant is not air-conditioned. 🟢 There are several combos in the menu that you can try, attached in the photos. 🟢 Coming to the hospitality of the staff it was utter non-sense, it was very harassing to face this kind of behaviour from the staff. One of their staff members were very rude and arrogant from the very beginning, as he was a constant hindrance when I tried to click pictures of the restaurant. Apparently, it is a rule that only couples can sit in the cabins and not a group of people, as the cabins were build to respect their privacy, we were not allowed to sit there and have our food, if anyone knows this, please comment or let me know, if this is actually the rule, there was a tiff with the staff member mentioned earlier and he went to behave even more badly. 🟢 Overall, the food is good considering the price they are charging. 🟢 Accepts all type of payments. 🟢 Available in all food aggregator apps.

it's sad to see how this once famous restaurant for the middle class famiies in South Calcutta going down the way it has. They were known for its quality and quantity a decade back and the senior Barua brothers who used take turn in manning the counter made sure that the goodwill of the restaurant was maintained but not any more.. The seniors are now old and two of the brothers passed away leaving the operation being looked after by the next generation who are basically part-timers since they are a working lot and attend the restaurant whenever they have spare time and now and a solitary manager fills in at their absence. Most of the old bearers and cooks are gone and the present lot are not too capable resulting in very mediocre food being served.. The so called popular oriya Chinese which they mastered about two decades back is now missing and now what you get is no better than the road side eateries available practically all around the city with a difference that you get a chair and table to rest your plate and the glass of water on. The quantity of Fried Rice is ample if you have it in the premises which is what most important factors for most of the present lot of diners but if you order the same item, you will be surprised to seen the small box they pack the food in which contains maybe a little over 50% of what they serve if you happen to dine there itself. The while box is rubber stamped with the name and absolutely of low quality, gone are days when they had their normal printed boxes, much bigger than what it is now. i however cannot say much about their other favourite items like the Moghlai paratas, Afghani cutlets and their once famous mutton kashas which came with a plain parata since I don't have it anymore. i only wish the young generation from this family start taking interest like their earlier generation so that the tradition continues. There was a time when these Buddhist Baruas came from the Chittagong range now in Bangladesh and opened more than 60 such restaurants all over Calcutta and elsewhere and now this unit in Bhowanipore is the lone survivor and it shouldn't be allowed to close down and for this some drastic action should be taken by the family to revive this place to its former glory .
