Great food compared with their rival Amma Mess. I love their mutton chukka, briyani and prawn roast. Their kola urundai is also amazing. My only issue with Chandran Mess is that the quantity for the price we pay is less.

A high recommendation from BIL and loads of foodies, Chandran mess is where we landed for our first meal in Madurai this time. A little off lunch time, almost about 3 PM, we were welcomed well but with an almost running-out menu. We were handed over the last portion of the only option in the biryani, the Country Chicken or the Nattu Kozhi biriyani made with shortgrain rice, typical tamil nadu style, very pepper heavy, deliciously spicy, almost dindigul style. Well I could not tell the difference between a Madurai style and Dindigul style, biriyani, which are almost adjacent cities anyway. If you know, comment below. The Biryani was the winner and I can definitely come back for this native version, but wifey does make this at home too. Then I ordered a meal that came with a range of mutton, chicken and fish gravies, supposedly without any meat pieces, but just cooked with the meat so that flavours remain and the pieces are usually taken out for other dishes, like the Sukka that we ordered. We got both Chicken and Mutton sukka, both had very distinct flavour profiles, but similar in heat, loved them with rice and paired them with a chicken omelette and vanjaram fish fry. My only issue was with the mutton sukka, which in entire Tamil Nadu is served just with the meat minus the offal, (organs) like the heart, kidney, liver. But here it had a bit of kidney, heart, and liver along with little meat. I personally avoid offal at any cost so for me this was a deal breaker and I might not come back here if that is a norm. Maybe we were at the end of lunch service and got served what was remaining, maybe the meat was less so they added these extra (which some prefer and ask for) to give us a complete meal, but our family hated it. The fish curry / kuzhambu was good, especially with the omelette and the (sea) fish fry was not 100% that is expected as Madurai is nowhere close to a coast, but it was ok. Ended the meal with some mutton curry rice and rasam, was definitely a good meal, could have been great if the offal could have been avoided, it was off-putting for me, again personally. But do try them out, I would anyday recommend Amma Mess which I had posted about earlier, but am yet to try the mutton sukka scene over there, maybe in my next visit, till then happy eating and do share your views on Chandran Mess

Had visited this place earlier and took a take away recently, both were good experiences. Their mutton kola was so far the best I've tasted in madurai next only to my grandma's recipe.. and also their prawn roast was made to utmost perfection with proper deveining and cooking of the prawn.. This place tops my list of new favourites..

The food was very traditional and authentic. We had mutton Biryani, meat balls, fish fry, prawn pepper, mutton sukka, rice with chicken curry, mutton curry, fish curry and rasam. Loved the banana leaf meal experience.

For Biriyani you can look amsavalli which could be more and most better than Chandran mess. Other dishes looks very normal. Also, I do not recommend door delivery from here. Only dine in can be good. But too costly! Not worth for money!

One of the worst hotel,I have ever come accross especially in Madurai. We ordered for meals.Instead keeping what is there in the menu, they simply forced to sell other items like naatu kozhi chops, fish kozhambu and other dishes.one leg piece of naatu kozhi Rs160 not worth at all.Do not go to this hotel and get yoursef cheated.
