It's our first visit to Madurai and wanted to experience some great authentic Madurai food. This place is definitely a must visit restaurant. The food is absolutely tasty and delicious. The service was great and they recommended the best of everything. We tried the mutton biryani - portion is good for 2, mutton chukka - great to have it some parotta and mutton kola - excellent starter. Overall a great gastronomical experience!

Kumar mess is a must try for non veg lovers. Their Chicken biryani and mutton biryani with meatballs should be on ones bucket list. They serve the food on banana leaf which makes it aesthetically pleasing. We also tried their chicken curry dosa which is a 3 layered dosa, one should try it with chutney. Overall a very good experience! Biryani Portion was little less we felt, overall a good hotel

Madurai is a place that never disappoints when it comes to native food. Their rich flavor and consistency can always be seen at all places. This too is one such place which has stood tall for years. Though the Quantity : Price ratio takes a hit everywhere, it all boils down to the Quality : Price now. Meals - Unlimited meals served with 2 sides (1 veg), gravies (chicken, mutton, and fish) followed by Rasam and buttermilk. This is one platter where a gormandizer would feel complete. Wholesome meal and best paired with mutton chukka!!! 🥰 Mutton chukka - This is one of their best dishes; tender BL meat sauteed in kicky pepper and gingelly oil, very flavorful with little gravy by the side, WOW!! 🤩 Chicken kothu parotta - Madurai parotta with the Salna is a never-ending love story. Flaky parotta soaked well in the gravy and shredded to pieces, sauteed and topped with the chicken, EXQUISITE!! 😍 Chicken idly and Egg dosa with Mutton varuval - One of the best combos to try out in Madurai is this combination; Chicken kothu Idly which was garnished well with the curry and coriander leaves, peppery egg dosa served with piping hot sambar but, I chose mutton. The fried meat was quite spicy and kicky from the ginger garlic paste, GOOD!! 😚 They have got limited parking space behind the building, so during peak hours, even that gets crowded. Their seating space too is limited with no scope of reservation. So, first come, first served. As mentioned earlier, their price is a bit higher compared to other places across, but they have the nativity and authenticity in their cooking. By the looks of it, this place looks like a temple setup, so don't be surprised; service was good and courteous with not much of a waiting time.

Because it’s kind of a ritual to go to Tallakulam Karuppannasamy Temple whenever we visit Madurai, we went this time too. We thought of dining out for the night. Initially we had planned to eat Kari Dosai in famous Konar kadai but as we spotted Kumar Mess in the vicinity, we thought of trying it out because a visit to that restaurant too has been pending for a while. There was renovation going on in the premises. We sat in the first floor of the building. Wonder why they had not got a huge window, it would have given the experience with a view. Anyways, we were not much hungry so we opted for a Mutton Biryani, Idiyappam, one Parotta and Veechu Parota each and a special item Rabbit Chukka. Mutton Biryani was decent, nothing great. Veechu Parotta was made well, Parotta wasn’t as soft as expected, Idiyappam, there is nothing to specify. The Rabbit Chukka was tasty but the quantity was less. Worst of it was the gravy (Salna) which was the worst I’ve had in Madurai, so the breads tasted awful due to it. But the main point is the after effect. Every one of us got stomach ache the next day. I guess it’s due to rabbit meat. As we had it post Deepavali, and the restaurant was closed, there is a high chance that we were given old stock. Will never visit Kumar Mess again.

The staff was not at all supportive. Didn’t help for table. After waiting for 20 mins when inquired for table, I was asked to visit next building Kumar mess. If you don’t know the local language staff and cashier both wont entertain.
