Udipi Shri Krishna Boarding in Matunga, Mumbai is a legendary institution in many ways. The founder Rama Nayak was the pioneer who introduced the Uduipi cuisine to Mumbai and beyond with a very humble beginnings of starting a boarding and lodging space in the South Indian population heavy Matunga area several decades ago. During my numerous visits to Mumbai, I had the privilege of dining here several times and was humbled and honoured to be served by the legend himself. Beyond a business the care uncle used to take while serving the clientele who are mostly bachelors from Southern part of India, craving for home food while relocating or visiting Mumbai on work. The utmost love with which he pours that extra ghee, or literally forces you to have another five puris or an additional mound of rice, uncle is an extraordinary person who loves to take care of guests visiting his restaurant. Now that uncle is no more, the legend's works is carried out by his family who are equally passionate and take utmost care to guests that I got to experience with a tad bit of nostalgia and It was very emotional for me to visit the place again after several years, and still get the same amount of warm hospitality that I am family with from my visits years ago. This time again, they stuffed me with more puris that I can handle, and more rice than I can manage, but no I am not complaining and I polished it all off with wonderful sambar or the Karnataka style huli, with a fantastic rasam that followed. My way of overeating here is the respect that I pay to the late founder and his love for serving people with love and overindulging them with good quality tasty food at a very affordable price. I remember it used to be 100 rupees then, where you pay extra if you want the sweet of the day, to be included in your meal, but now the price of the entire meal is 275 that includes the sweet dish too. The watered buttermilk was well made, not very spicy, but just what I needed with my meal on a hot afternoon, and it was unlimited. In Fact the whole meal is unlimited except the curd, and the sweet choice of the day. The sweet options that day were Payasam of the day, carrot halwa, aamrakhand, rasgulla, mysore pudding or gulab jamun. I opted for a mysore pudding which was decadent, rich and extremely sweet but thoroughly enjoyable. Ending the meal on this sweet note, I chatted up with the current owners who were extremely happy with my visit after several years, while I thanked them for continuing the tradition and left as they got back to what was an extremely busy lunch service.

🌿 **A Soul-Satisfying South Indian Experience at Udupi Shri Krishna Boarding, Matunga** 🌿 If you’re looking for food that feels like a warm hug from home, **Udupi Shri Krishna Boarding** in Matunga is the place to be. This iconic gem has been quietly winning hearts with its **authentic, homely South Indian meals** served with simplicity, love, and tradition — all on a fresh banana leaf. 🍛 I opted for the **Unlimited South Indian Thali (₹300)** and walked out with a full stomach and a fuller heart. The thali is a **wholesome spread** – thoughtfully put together, balanced, and bursting with flavor, *not spice*. It’s easy on the stomach and rich in satisfaction. Here’s what’s on the leaf: ✔️ 6 flavorful sabjis – each unique, mild, and comforting ✔️ Soft chapatis & crispy puris ✔️ Delicious **sambar** and tangy **rasam** ✔️ Curd, fresh white butter, **crunchy papad**, and classic pickle ✔️ One **complimentary sweet** of your choice (from a tempting lineup of 4-5 options) I went with **Shrikhand** – silky, rich, and just sweet enough. Couldn’t resist and bought **Rasgulla** and **Payasam** extra – both were worth every bite! ✨ What truly stands out here is the **hospitality**. The staff serves with genuine warmth – always checking in, refilling with a smile, and making sure you feel at home. It’s the kind of place where you eat slowly, savor every bite, and leave with a smile. 🎯 Pro tips: * Go with an **empty stomach** – you’ll want to try everything. * It’s **pure veg**, **no onion no garlic**, and ideal if you're looking for **clean, authentic food**. * Perfect for families, elders, or anyone craving a traditional South Indian dining experience. 📍 Tucked in the heart of Matunga, it's a reminder of the charm and soul of old-school Mumbai eateries. ✅ Final verdict: **Authentic. Affordable. Absolutely unmissable.** Whether you're a local or just visiting, Udupi Shri Krishna Boarding is a culinary pitstop that deserves a top spot on your Mumbai food trail. 🙌 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ --- Fantastic place but very crowded on weekends.

Very quick service. Very tasty food. Crowded during weekends. The servers serve food very sweetly. Such basic food, yet so tasty. Nice variation in sweets. When you reach the Google location which is on main road, reach the end of building and take right, where you'll find a board with arrows, which will help you reach, otherwise it would be confusing.

We had to wait for half an hour to get table. The wait was worth it. Please visit this place if you want to try authentic South Indian Rasam, Rice and papadam.

I recently ordered the full plated meal with high expectations based on the description provided. The meal was advertised to include six types of vegetables along with rasam, sambhar, dal, and a sweet dish, which is what they serve when you dine in there. However, when the order arrived, it fell drastically short of what was promised. The meal contained only two vegetable options instead of six, and the side of dal and sambhar. Both the rasam and the sweet dish were missing entirely, which was disappointing and left the meal feeling incomplete. For a restaurant that markets itself on providing authentic, wholesome meals, the lack of attention to detail here was a letdown.
