On Sunday, we had the opportunity to visit Gajalee Restaurant at MIDC, Andheri East. Given Gajalee’s legacy and reputation as one of Mumbai’s iconic seafood destinations, we walked in with high expectations. Unfortunately, our overall experience was, at best, average and certainly not worth the price we paid. We started with Bombil Fry, which fortunately lived up to expectations. It has always been one of our favorite dishes at Gajalee, and this was the only dish that maintained the standards we associate with the brand. Next, we ordered Prawns Koliwada, and this was a major disappointment. The prawns were coated with an unusually thick batter that had a surprisingly sweet taste, completely overpowering the seafood. The dish lacked the authentic flavors one expects and was simply below par. The biggest disappointment of the evening was the Surmai Tawa Fry. The fish slice served was extremely thin, overcooked, dry, and devoid of the rich texture and flavor that good Surmai is known for. To describe it as disappointing would be an understatement — it was a complete letdown. We then ordered Pomfret Curry with Neer Dosa and Indrayani Rice. While the Pomfret itself was fresh, the curry lacked depth, flavor, and the signature taste one associates with a traditional coastal Pomfret curry. It felt bland and incomplete, as though something essential was missing. The custard dessert was acceptable, but by then the overall dining experience had already left a poor impression. For a meal for two costing close to ₹4,000, the experience was nowhere close to delivering value for money. What is particularly disappointing is that this feedback is for a restaurant with such a rich legacy and reputation in Mumbai’s seafood scene. I sincerely hope this feedback reaches the owners and management. Gajalee has built its name over decades, but experiences like ours raise serious concerns about consistency, quality control, and maintaining the standards that customers have come to expect from this iconic brand.

The service and staff are very good and hospitable however the food Is extremely disappointing. It was only spicy and had no flavour. Keep this as your last option. There vile parle outlet is way better

Yesterday, I went for dinner at this restaurant as I was very excited after reading the good reviews. However, the experience turned out to be extremely disappointing and is something I will never forget for all the wrong reasons. We ordered one Surmai fish thali, egg curry, bhakri, and later Surmai fry. In a typical Surmai thali, especially in most restaurants, you expect a proper fried Surmai piece along with well-balanced sides. Instead, this thali included a deep-fried bombil that was excessively oily. The Surmai piece was served in gravy along with potato sabji — which was quite surprising, as potato sabji is not something usually expected in a fish thali. The solkadhi was the worst part; it tasted as if fish oil had mixed into it, making it unpleasant. The egg curry was watery and lacked flavor, definitely not worth the price charged. We were served only two komdi wade in one plate, whereas most places usually provide four. Moreover, these wade were extremely oily. Finally, we ordered Surmai fry after the staff mentioned that Surmai is served as tawa fry, while other fish varieties are deep-fried like pakoda. Unfortunately, the Surmai tawa fry was another big disappointment. It looked more like a tandoori preparation rather than a proper tawa fry, and it was so chewy that we were unable to eat it. When we raised the concern, the response we received was simply, “Yaha pe aise hi milta hai,” which was quite unprofessional. People really need to learn how to prepare and serve a proper thali, especially when they are charging premium prices. Overall, this was a never-forgetting worst experience. The food quality, taste, portion size, and staff response did not justify the price at all, and the experience did not match the reviews.

One star only because Google won’t let me post without giving one. Gajalee, Marol is easily one of the most overrated and disappointing restaurants I’ve ever visited. Honestly, even a roadside stall serves food with more taste, quantity, and value than this place. GAJALEE, please consider shutting down and stop scaming people in the name of Malvani food, its a sheer insult to the cuisine. We visited for lunch today and ordered the basics — Bombil Fry (₹525) and a Surmai Thali. The Bombil Fry arrived as two tiny, overstuffed pieces drowned in oil. Absolutely ridiculous for the price. The actual food on that plate probably wasn’t even worth ₹50. Zero taste, zero quality, and absolutely zero value for money. Then came the so-called Surmai Thali — shockingly, it didn’t even include fried surmai. Instead, it had fish curry with one tiny boiled piece of surmai, the curry tasted no where even close to Maharashtrian style, some bean sabzi, two random pieces of bombil fry (seriously, who puts bombil in a Surmai Thali?), and solkadhi. Completely pathetic and a total waste of money. The experience was so bad that we lost all interest in eating there and ended up going to another restaurant nearby to have lunch again. The staff couldn’t care less. For almost 20 minutes, nobody even bothered coming to our table to take an order or check on us. The entire place runs on hype and fake reviews. We regret spending 1500 for something that was not worth for a value. Please do not fall for the ratings or reviews online. This place is an absolute scam in the name of seafood dining.

I genuinely don’t understand how Gajalee has the reputation it does after the experience I had. This was easily one of the worst seafood meals I’ve ever had. The fish thali was a complete letdown. The taste was bland, the flavors were nowhere close to authentic, and the overall quality was shockingly poor. For a restaurant that claims to specialize in seafood, this was unacceptable. We also ordered fish fry separately, and it was even worse. It was horribly overcooked, dry, and so chewy that it felt like eating rubber. It didn’t taste fresh at all and was severely lacking in proper seasoning. Calling it seafood would be generous. Overall, the entire meal was a huge disappointment and absolutely not worth the money. I would strongly advise anyone looking for authentic, quality seafood to avoid this place.

Very disappointing experience at Gazale Restaurant, Andheri branch. Even after 10 years, the quality of food and service remains poor. The food standard is still low, and the staff seems uninterested—especially if you order a small quantity, which is quite unprofessional. Basic items like solkadhi are not prepared properly, yet they claim to serve authentic Malwani cuisine, which is far from reality. There are many smaller nearby restaurants that offer much better taste and value for money. It honestly feels like the owner does not care about customer feedback or the money people spend here. Claiming authenticity without delivering it is misleading. Strongly not recommended.
