As the old Irani restaurants fade into obscurity, there are some ‘reproductions’ making their debuts on the culinary scene. Some of these reproductions are faithful to the originals but others make blatant attempts to cash in on the nostalgia factor and offer not much else. It was my feeble attempt to clutch on to my fond memories of Irani restaurants that led me on my mission to locate and check out The Irani Cafe in Kandivli East. The place has an obscure storefront. It is located in the vicinity of the Thakur Stadium in Thakur Village. The place is tiny and service is in an alfresco-type setting in the patio. Seating appears makeshift. Honestly, the rating for ambience would be ‘Not Applicable ‘. If one gets there before noon, it is Breakfast time with minimal offerings. I ordered a double omelette, a Bun Maska (Brun Maska was unavailable) and an Irani chai. I waited patiently in the patio on the makeshift seating as my order taker took his two steps into the kitchen to work on my omelette. Upon being asked, I requested all items to be served all together. One has to request silverware, but so did one at the old Irani restaurants. The omelette was good in that there was no excess oil but the pendulum veered to the other end - the omelette was bone dry. Gets better - no salt, no pepper. I guess that too has to be requested. The Bun Maska and the Irani chai were good and evoked those fond memories. Apparently, the keema pau is good but available only afternoon. Oh well! I would be hard pressed to give the quality of food any higher than passing grade. Pushed to the wall, I’d give service passing grade. But, honestly, it was non-existent. And I am grading this against the typical no-frills Irani restaurant service standards. To sum it up, I am not sure if this Irani restaurant would make any of the original Irani restaurateurs proud. My guess is: Not! Probably worth a try but please do not bring along your Irani restaurant yardstick, you might be disappointed.

We went for breakfast and ordered chicken keema masala and it was ok, thereafter ordered masala omelet and boiled egg bhurji. Bhurji was good but they don't know how to cook omelet it was really bad I had to just swallow it. we did ordered chicken patty and this was too bad and we had to get it canceled. Just Chai was good. overall this place is passable.
