The Man Who Dressed History: An Evening at Mr Button Every few years, Delhi discovers that a cocktail bar needs a story. Usually the story is an afterthought, a name borrowed from a colonial club and a vague nod to "heritage." So I was prepared to be unimpressed when I went to Mr Button Residence in Greater Kailash 3. But the story here is not an afterthought. It is the menu. Henry J. Button, we are told, was born in 1893 to Welsh immigrant parents and became a tailor of rakish charm on Savile Row in the 1920s. Behind the brass plate of No. 15, kings, dukes and ministers came for suits and stayed for confidences. His ledgers recorded more than measurements. They traced who was close to whom, and who owed what. When the lean 1930s arrived, Button left with his wit, his wardrobe, those ledgers, and a collection of antique buttons so rare they worked like passports. Thereafter he turned up wherever history needed a witness: palaces in the Far East, Havana back rooms, nightcaps with Hemingway, martinis with Hepburn. Is he real? I suspect not, and I don't think it matters. What matters is that the bar commits to the fiction. Each cocktail is a chapter in a journey that runs from the early 1920s to the late 1950s, and you drink your way through the decades. I began in Seville in the late 1940s with El Toro. The story has Button in the sun at the Plaza de Toros, watching the great Dominguín. The drink is Patrón Silver and mezcal, with passion fruit, habanero, agave and lime. It is smoky, spicy and tropical, which sounds like a lot to ask of one glass. But a bullfight is not a subtle affair either, and the drink has the sense to match it. Then came the Risky Romanoff, my favourite of the two for sheer audacity. Michael Romanoff was part restaurateur, part con man, and the legend has him mixing whisky and wine in a Hollywood cellar because nothing else was left. The bar's version uses Dewar's 12, lemon, a wine reduction, and a milk-clarified finish. Milk clarification is now a bartender's party trick, but here it serves the story: a drink that looks like it shouldn't work, and does. The food is more than bar snacks. The Pomelo Salad (grapefruit, mixed leaves, herbs, crisp rice puffs, yuzu vinaigrette) is a sensible opener, bright and sharp, and the rice puffs give it the crunch most salads lack. The Crispy Chicken Bites with yuzu mayo and citrus salt are exactly what you want next to a strong drink. The Butter Garlic Prawns, pan-seared with olive oil and Dijon, are a straightforward pleasure. But the dish I'd go back for is the Moroccan Spiced Lamb, a lamb kibbeh with mint labneh. It was awesome. I say this as someone who is wary of kibbeh in bars, where it's usually an afterthought. This one was not. We finished with the Sticky Toffee Pudding, served with whisky cream and salted caramel gelato. It is an old English warhorse, and the whisky cream is a good touch, a nod back to the Scotch in the Romanoff. It is a satisfying end to a long evening. What I admire about Mr Button is its discipline. The concept is easy to overdo, and the drinks, the dishes and the storytelling are all in service of one idea. Delhi's bar scene has no shortage of good cocktails. It has far fewer places with a point of view. Go with friends, order widely, and let the menu take you around the world. Henry Button would have approved. Or at least he would have kept it in the ledger.

Cocktail menu was limited and not inspiring . They need to relook at their food and drinks menu to keep attracting repeat customers
