The tiffin system is extremely popular in South India, and its essence has beautifully made its way to Pune through MTR (Madras Tiffin Room). This place truly captures the charm of an authentic South Indian eatery—minimalistic, aesthetic, and welcoming—where you can enjoy classic dishes all day long with a cup of filter coffee by your side. And honestly, who doesn’t love South Indian food? My love for crispy dosas is an endless conversation. Pair that with fluffy idlis, perfectly crisp medu vadas, flavorful chutneys, and piping hot sambar, and you simply can’t go wrong. MTR is that perfect spot—whether you’re catching up with friends, spending time with family, or enjoying your own company over a comforting cup of filter coffee. We started with their thali, which included Masala Dosa, Medu Vada, Idli, Kara Bath, tomato and garlic chutney, coconut chutney, coriander chutney, sambar, buttermilk, and pineapple kesari. Everything on the plate was delightful—the dosa and vada were crisp, the idlis soft and spongy—but my absolute favorites were the chutneys and the pineapple kesari. The thali is ideal for one person, but honestly, it can easily be shared between two if you plan on ordering additional items. We wrapped it up with refreshing buttermilk, perfect for beating the summer heat. Next came the ghee roast dosa, which was served hot and done just right. You could clearly taste the ghee without it being overpowering—perfectly balanced and delicious when paired with the chutneys. Given the peak summer heat, we couldn’t resist trying their iced filter coffee. One sip in, my sister and I exchanged looks of pure relief—it was that good. Perfectly chilled, mildly sweet, and incredibly refreshing. We loved it so much that we instantly ordered another. This is a must‑try! Even though we were quite full by then, the dahi vadas looked too tempting to skip. They usually serve two pieces, but we opted for one portion. Soft vadas soaked in fresh curd, balanced sweetness, and just the right crunch from the boondi—it was the perfect finishing touch. If you’re still not convinced, let me say this: from the aesthetic ambiance to consistently good food and warm service, MTR is a place that truly grows on you. A comforting South Indian experience you’ll want to revisit again.

The food was good, but having eaten here before, I can tell that the quality has degraded over time. It’s a bit disappointing because it used to be much better. Hopefully, they get back to their original standards soon.

Food is average quality. Ambience is okay. Taste was mediocre. Somewhat expensive since it is in KP, could have better taste, service and variety.
