Ever since I moved to this area I struggled to find an iconic place with unique food. Since this area is newly developed there aren't any old restaurants which are very well known and popular. Most of the places here are franchisee outlets operated by inexperienced people so the overall food quality is average in the surroundings. However I was pleasantly surprised on my visit to Udupi Atithya which opened last month at G Mall. This is a quaint place with 6 tables and impeccable cleanliness. They serve amazing South Indian fare which has really authentic flavours. Their Sambaar is superb and the first spoonful immediately reminded me of the kind of Sambaar we get in Tamilnadu. We ordered the following dishes: 1) We started with Maddur Wada which was on the special menu for the day. The dish consisted of two crispy flat wadas reminiscent of the parippu wada of Kerala or daal wada as we know it. The rice flour imparted supreme crunch to the wada and was paired well with the coconut chutney. The crisp and chewy fried onion bits which were caramelized by deep frying and the crushed peanuts gave it a unique flavour and texture. However it was a big let down that they were served cold, I am unsure if they are supposed to be that way but I would have surely loved freshly fried piping hot wadas. 2) Next came the Paper Masala Dosa which is their signature dish. The dosa fills up more than half the table and is crispy to the core. Inside the dosa there is ample filling of Aalu Masala which is enough for the entire jumbo dosa. The coconut chutney has the earthy taste of freshly grated young coconut and the Sambaar with assorted veggies completes the dish. It is worth mentioning that their Sambaar is not sweet unlike some places in the city. 3) In the mains we had their South Indian thali which is a huge meal complete with all the elements of a balanced diet. The quantity is such that a weak eater like me can't possibly eat it on my own. The thali consists of chapatis and rice accompanied by dry aloo chana sabji with roasted grated coconut which has a pleasant nutty flavour. The gravy sabji was mixed vegetables southern style. It was rich and filling. The rasam was tangy and spicy and packed quite a nice punch. The masala buttermilk was soothing with grated ginger, spices, plenty of fresh coriander and tempering. The rawa kesari had a nice flavour but was a bit dry. The thali also consisted of curd, papad, pickle and Daal. 4) By now we were totally stuffed, however the Dahi Wada on the menu refused to let me sheath my spoon! The dish came with one jumbo sized wada drenched in thick curd. It had a sprinkling of red chilli and masala along with the tempering which had crunchy moong daal. The soft wada was so light that I could have easily polished off 2. The thick and chilled curd was adequately sweet and had just a hint of sourness. The crunchy tempering provided a nice contrasting texture with each bite. This is my second visit to Udupi Atithya and it has quickly become everybody's go to spot. The prices are also very reasonable and a filling meal for 2 people hardly costs ₹300/-. They also have daily rotating special dishes on the menu which are unique and authentic. The owner and manager are so humble and eager to accommodate the customer. They don't even charge for extra sambaar and chutney. The frothy filter coffee on my next table looked inviting but since I was fully stuffed and also had dahi, I decided not to torture my stomach and skip it for the day.
