One of the main inspirations to go to Yercaud was Selvi Mess. Due to heavy traffic throughout the journey, I missed it in the onwards journey and thought I’d not be able to have it during return too because I start generally early but knowing that there is going to be traffic no matter what, I decided to start late. So started around 11 AM from Yercaud, reached Selvi Mess by 12.30 and started our return journey from there. Even at 12.30 the restaurant was packed. There are a number of branches of Selvi Mess but I wanted to try the Shevapet one because it felt most authentic and guess it’s the first of the lot. We were four in all with a couple of kids; the four seaters were very comfortable. Thanks to the table and stool ambience, the vibe was perfect and spacious for three of us to sit in a side. They specifically state outside that they have only non-veg and also repeat the same when we order, especially if its meals. Our orders were Meals – Lovely, with rice boiled to perfection. Mutton, Chicken and Fish kulambu were all great; especially there wasn’t much masala to trouble the stomach. Rasam was top notch and Mor (Butter Milk) was a great finish. They serve greens and beetroot as well as sides. I didn’t like greens but beetroot was nice. Mutton Biryani – Was amazing, got a Madurai style seeraga samba like biryani, guess it’s the same rice. Pieces were succulent. Chicken Biryani – Tasted similar to mutton biryani with chicken pieces. Mutton Kothu Kari – It was okayish, quantity was good but got too much of a mutton smell (kavuchi vadai). That generally happens even when we cook at home or typically in any south Indian restaurants. Not sure why. In north Indian restaurants, it doesn’t. It works as a great accompaniment with Roti. But best is from the Pakistani restaurants I had in Dubai. With the big roti, it’s absolutely fabulous. Prawns Fry – Easily the showstopper of the day. Generally Prawns would always be overcooked but here it was lovely and soft, also the pieces were big. A totally drool worthy item. Chicken 65 – No complaints, cooked to perfection. Omelet – Good, no complaints. Half Boil – Not a fan but again no complaints. The serving akka, I couldn’t get her name but is written as Kasthuri in the bill, was nice, polite and observant. Hope they’ve put the right name. Hospitality as a whole was great. Generally I tip out of compulsion but that day I was happy to tip. Thanks to the wholesome lunch, it made my mood great and helped in driving for next few hours. Thankfully the restrooms too were well maintained. Bro tip: 1) There is a beeda (Pan) shop next to the restaurant. I was skeptical to buy because it was a packed sweet beeda but was lovely for Rs. 20. There are a number of beeda stalls, maybe everything is equally good but this is the one I tried and was terrific. 2) Park your car in the street prior to it. This street where Selvi Mess is present is reasonably wide but haphazard bike parking makes it difficult to park in the street. But this being a dead end is an advantage.

Simple yet yummmmmy south indian ( tamil) non vegetarian food on the Salem highway. Mutton Biryani had excellent flavour and taste but meat was Hard and chewy. Non vegetarian meal was basic with 3 types of gravy chicken, mutton and fish, no pieces. The country chicken nattu kozhi pepper fry was good too. Above all I love the fact that they serve food on banana leaf!

Went for dinner while driving Car from Chennai to Cbe. Got to know the place is kind of famous, so kept going till we reached this place, though we were hungry. The hotel was crowded even after 9:30 pm. We took the inside dining area, which was not that neatly cleaned. It was dirty near the foot area. Saw Biriyani being served and so eagerly asked for it, but got to know it for over. Not even Kuska was available, so went for Parotta. Then order Chicken 65, Brain fry, Chicken pichupotathu, Ghee Parotta, Kolambu kalaki and Egg fried rice. Parotta and Mutton gravy given along with it tasted good. All sides were also good, tasted better than Parotta. Ghee Parotta was not completely cooked, little bit inside was half cooked. Rest all were good, Egg fried rice topped the chart. Everything is ok except the prices, as it seems a bit high for the quantity they serve. Can visit again to taste the Biriyani. My Ratings: Food quality: 3.5 Quantity/Value for money: 3 Ambience: 3 Staff Courtesy: 3

Place is very congested. Having more people at once being in a hurry to get seats. Apart from that the taste is really great, you can feel real chettinad.

I had visited selvi mess as I have older memory of taste and service which they provided. but now I am upset becoz taste is not up to the mark and moreover I don't know how it cost me rs1050 for 1 katla 2 kushka and 1 mutton biryani 1 mutton sukka. after that server asks me how much to bill. his thought is to bill for lower price and loot the balance amount.i don't know how the management is allowing this... any how I am not going to step into this hotel anymore

Waited for more than 30 minutes just for 2 parottas. My side dish ( Mutton chukka) was delivered but in spite of repeated questioning, the parottas never came. At last, fed up I just walked away, but there were no apologies nor concern showed by the management, who billed me for the mutton chukka. They have lost a genuine customer!
