About the Event

On Nabami, we will visit a part of mini Europe of Bengal. In 1673, the French East India Company purchased land on the banks of the Ganges, leading to the establishment of the French settlement of Chandannagar, or Farashdanga, by 1688. Except for a brief period, Chandannagar remained under French rule until 1952, well after India gained its independence in 1947. This prolonged French presence is why the town retains subtle French influences in its culture, architecture, museums, and language institutions.

We will explore the town's historical sites, including its lanes, riverside, ghats, and old mansions, to uncover its rich history. We'll visit several centuries-old heritage household Durga Pujas, including the 650 years old Puja of Mankundu Khan Bari, 518 years old Basu Bari Puja, and the ancient Durga Pujas of Durga Charan Rakshit Bari and Harihar Sett Bari—the first and second Indian recipients of the 'Legion d'Honneur', France's highest honour.

After enjoying a non-vegetarian meal of chicken and fresh fish at a part of the Sett House, we will travel to another European settlement, Chinsurah (Chuchura). The Dutch traders settled here in 1635, predating the French in Bengal. They traded with other Asian countries but eventually surrendered to the English East India Company. In Chinsurah, we will visit the historical town, the beautiful Boro Seal Bari mansion, their heritage puja, and the Durga Puja of the Adhya Bari.
