About Building From Scratch Conversation

Visakhapatnam-based artist Ramesh V taught at the Department of Fine Arts, Andhra University, from 1985 to 2020 and continues mentoring several artists across India. In his teaching philosophy, which spanned over three decades, he discusses how systems of learning in many educational spaces are not readily available. It then becomes one’s responsibility to build things from scratch, informed by the best practices in other parts of the country and the world. He also speaks about his experiences working with students from diverse backgrounds that necessitated a space of learning and belonging.

In this conversation, Ramesh V will discuss with Srinivas Aditya Mopidevi about the systems he has instituted, and how his art’s closeness to nature and philosophy informed  his teaching practice.

About Ramesh V

Ramesh V’s works explore the interconnectedness of humans and nature. Through everyday objects such as fruits, vessels, and bones, he reflects on human mortality and memory, meditating on the fragility and depth of life.

Ramesh V is a graduate of the MS University, Baroda. He received the Sanskriti Award and Senior Fellowship from the Department of Culture, Government of India. His recent solo and group exhibitions have taken place in Delhi, Moscow, and Mumbai. His works are in the collection of Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Modern Art, and the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford.

About Makers and Teachers (Conversation Series)

Makers and Teachers is a conversation series that brings together artists, architects, designers, filmmakers, and other creative practitioners who have spent a significant part of their career as teachers, to lead the next generation of creators. The series unpacks how these visionaries approach teaching and making, and how each of these methods informs the other.

The Makers and Teachers conversation series is conceptualized by Srinivas Aditya Mopidevi, Curator of Visual Arts at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art.
