Welcome to Amritsar. Check-in. Freshen up and gather for lunch and introductions.
Around 3:30 PM, leave for the Wagah Border Beating Retreat ceremony. Wagah border is the only road shared with estranged neighbours, Pakistan. The ceremony takes place everyday at sunset since 1959 on both sides of the border, the soldiers bring down their flags in perfect unison with the setting sun. Soldiers from India and Pakistan kick off the ceremony with ecstatic drills, parades and impressively high kicks to show the power of their country and respect for the neighbour. Let your heart thump out of your chest when the flags come down as you can’t stop but wonder how these two countries stand head to head even when they were carved out from the same land.
Golden temple at night is lit up with thousands of lights to add more beauty to the marvel. Bury yourself in the golden lights reflecting from the holy lake and the temple. A sight to behold it is.
Amritsar’s Kesar-Da-Dhaba is literally world famous for its thali and authentic Punjabi food. After you shop to your heart’s content, gorge on delicious Dhaba food for dinner here.
Day 2: Golden Temple, Other Monuments and Street Food Of Amritsar
After a hearty breakfast, head to Jallianwala Bagh memorial. Part of the gardens are now converted into a memorial for the martyrs of the 1919 massacre.
What you saw lit up last night is no less a marvel during the day. Built in the 16th century, the Harmandir Saheb and The golden temple complex provides a sublime peacefulness that cannot be experienced anywhere else. Sit down, soak in the beauty, capture some memories on your smartphone or DSLR to take back home. It is Guru Nanak Jayanti and where else would you want to be other than the biggest place of worship for the community?
You cannot miss the Langar Food at the Golden temple. The langar tradition started in the 15th century and continues even today. Have lunch at the Langar and say your goodbyes to the Golden Temple. In the afternoon, you will be visiting the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum, to marvel at the glory of the Sher-i-Punjab who kept the Muslim invaders at bay, especially from Afghanistan. The Panorama room highlights the king’s conquests with life size modelling of the events.
After learning of the Maharaja’s adventures it is now time for some shopping. To call Amritsar’s local markets of Hall Bazaar, Guru Bazaar, Katya Jamal Singh Market unique would be an understatement.
