Chittorgarh Fort

Chittorgarh Fort, Chittorgarh

About

Chittorgarh Fort is one of India’s largest and most significant historic forts. Built in the post Gupta period, it was successively ruled by the Moris or Mauryas, Pratiharas, Paramaras, Solankis and later the Guhilots or Sisodias.

Historical Background

The fort is renowned for three episodes of Jauhar. The first occurred in 1303 C.E. when Alauddin Khilji invaded during the reign of Rawal Ratan Singh, leading Rani Padmini and her companions to commit Jauhar. The second followed the death of Rana Sanga in 1528 C.E. when Bahadur Shah attacked. The third took place in 1567 C.E. during Emperor Akbar’s siege in the reign of Maharana Udai Singh. These events reflect the fort’s turbulent history and the resilience of its defenders.

Location and Significance

Situated in southern Rajasthan, the fort forms part of the cultural identity of Mewar. Along with Kumbhalgarh, Ranthambore, Jaisalmer, Gagron and Amer, it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing of Hill Forts of Rajasthan since 2013.

Architectural Materials and Design

The fort features stone ramparts, intricately carved towers, Rajput palatial elements, Nagara-style temples and an advanced system of reservoirs and stepwells that sustained the settlement through long sieges. Sculptural programs on structures like Vijay Stambh and Kirti Stambh reveal exceptional craftsmanship across Jain and Rajput traditions.
