For this edition of Good Frequencies, in collaboration with On The Jungle Floor, we’re heading to New York in the ’90s, a decade when hip-hop had many voices and the city carried through every one of them.
NY State of Mind is a vinyl listening session through ten tracks from across that landscape. Rather than following a single artist or album, we’ll trace the sound as it shifted: from the jazz-leaning grooves and sample-rich production of the early decade to the harder sounds and new stars that followed, each telling the story of the city in its own way.
We’ll move between boroughs, artists and albums, listening for the details in the beats, the writing and the worlds each record creates. There are far more great New York hip-hop records than we could ever fit into one night, so this is our own subjective selection of ten tracks we love and feel tell part of the story. Nas’s “N.Y. State of Mind” gives the session its name, but the story belongs to the wider city.
More than anything, the idea is to spend some proper time with the records. We’ll listen, stop every now and then to talk about what we’re hearing, probably go off on a few tangents and then put the needle back down.
