About the Event

Membership access to Lightcube Film Society’s annual calendar of activities, which include specially curated film programmes, publications on film, workshops on film appreciation and its cinema-based outreach and education project. Different membership levels will offer the patron different levels of access to the activities of the Society.

INTRODUCTION

For its programming for the upcoming year, the Society has devised a set of six programmes (four packages, a retrospective and a special project) which will feature a total of close to fifty films from around the world.

The design of each individual package of films employs a curatorial strategy that seeks to locate the featured titles within the context of the location of their exhibition. The films shown will therefore provide the audience with means to contemplate the local history, mythologies, prevalent social circumstances and anxieties of the larger area in which the venue is situated. The curated packages will include an examination of the architecture of apartment blocks in Gurgaon; the history of barbarism in Noida and the colonialist legacy of Central Delhi. The final package will include a series of films that examine the relation between inner, psychological state of characters and the setting that surrounds them – these will be organised throughout the year in different environments across the city: a jungle, an abandoned house, a hostel, among other places.

PUBLICATIONS

Lightcube's publications include specialised literature on film: Umbra, its print publication, which covers developments in the areas of film production, criticism, preservation, archiving and exhibition, from around the country, as well as Projectorhead, an online journal of film criticism that features writing on contemporary and classic cinema from around the world.

EDUCATION

The Society’s outreach programme, The Dhenuki Project, employs the medium of cinema to encourage audiences in villages and small towns across the country to contemplate their own lives and later, locate indigenous methods of organization and upliftment.
