About the Event

Film Heritage Foundation in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai is conducting a unique practical workshop dedicated to the elemental skill of screening films on the big screen. Spread over three days, the workshop will cover various aspects of both celluloid and digital film projection including preparing a film for projection, threading a film, learning about digital standards and troubleshooting. The workshop will be conducted by Florian Höehensteiger, expert film projectionist from the Bundesarchiv, Germany who is proficient in projecting films on 16mm and 35mm as well as on digital. The course will consist of lectures and practical sessions followed by daily film screenings. “Film Heritage Foundation’s film projection workshop is a much-needed training initiative that will also create awareness about the essential skill of projecting film. When Film Heritage Foundation did the Bachchan Back to the Beginning retrospective across the country last year, I realized that many contemporary projectionists screening digital films did not know how to handle archival film with its different aspect ratios resulting in heads being cut off or the image being unnaturally stretched during some screenings. Also, projecting films on celluloid has been slowly fading away over the years and I knew that this is a skill that needs to be preserved and carried on for posterity as most of our film heritage even today is on celluloid. Film preservation does not mean just preserving reels of film but also the entire ecosystem of celluloid as a medium and that includes projection on film. This is why we decided to conduct this unique workshop so people understand that film projection is part of preservation and a skill that needs to be learned.”
