History of Gond Art
Gond art is a traditional tribal artform practiced by the Gond community, one of the largest Indigenous groups in India, mainly found in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and parts of Maharashtra and Odisha.
Originally painted on walls during festivals and rituals, Gond art was a way to preserve and pass down stories of nature, gods, animals, and daily life. The word “Gond” comes from ‘Kond’, meaning green mountain, reflecting their deep connection with nature.
In the 1980s, artists like Jangarh Singh Shyam brought Gond art onto paper and canvas, introducing it to the contemporary art world while keeping its spirit alive. Today, it is known for its signature patterns, vibrant colours, and storytelling through symbols and rhythm.
