This Artist in Me workshop invites participants to explore how we experience spaces as shifting, layered environments shaped by memory, movement and perception.
Led by M. Pravat, whose practice engages with the city as fragmented and constantly evolving, the session approaches the urban landscape as something we carry within us constructed as much from lived experience as from physical form.
Drawing inspiration from the structural clarity and emotional intensity found in the works of Tyeb Mehta, participants will work with drawing, paper and collage to build compositions that move between observation and imagination.
Through a series of guided prompts, participants will:
● translate personal memories of spaces into visual fragments
● layer, cut, and reassemble forms using paper and mixed materials
● explore how repetition, interruption, and placement can shape meaning
● engage in group conversations and reflections to build shared perspectives
The process will move between making and discussion, allowing ideas to evolve collectively as well as individually.
As compositions develop, participants will reflect on how images can hold multiple layers at once, where external structures and internal responses overlap. The workshop also considers how stillness and movement, balance and tension can coexist within a visual frame.
Designed for adults, the session focuses on process, material exploration, and dialogue, offering an open-ended approach to understanding how we see, remember, and reconstruct the spaces we inhabit.
Artist Bio
M. Pravat was born in 1972 in Kolkata, India. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in painting in 2002 and his Master’s in 2004, both granted by the Faculty of Fine Arts at M.S. University, Baroda. M. Pravat’s art practice examines architectural forms and materials through a fractured lens, using photography, paintings and installations. He believes that our lives are unquestionably shaped by the built environments we inhabit. Along with images and materials, architecture plays a pivotal role in the formation of our sensibilities, and in shaping our experiences and understanding of space and form. His practice is deeply embedded in the manifestations and imaginations of architectural spaces, where he attempts to
shed the representational familiarity associated with our built environments, and in doing so, finds himself appropriating, redistributing, and reconfiguring the relationship between images and materials. Over the years, his works have been presented in solo and group exhibitions, biennales and art fairs in Colombo, Delhi, Dubai, Mumbai, New York, Seoul and Zurich. He was a recipient of the Pro Helvetia artist residency in Switzerland. M. Pravat lives and works in New Delhi, India.
