About the venue

Jaunpur Fort presents an impressive external appearance marked by high defensive walls and an architectural scheme designed to command attention. Although the monument appears massive from outside, the uneven ground within results in varying internal wall heights.

Historical Background

Constructed as a fortified stronghold, the complex emphasizes defensive strength through a carefully planned entrance system. The bastions that flank the gateway on the north and south once served as important watchtowers, allowing guards to survey the surrounding landscape and prepare for potential threats.

Location and Significance

Situated in Jaunpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh, the fort occupies a mound whose eastern half supports its principal structures. The site holds historical value for its demonstration of regional fortification techniques and for its distinctive interpretation of medieval military architecture.

Architectural Materials and Design

The fort’s single eastern entrance is a monumental gateway framed by projecting piers linked by a lofty stone archway. The gateway rises in four storeys enriched with ornamented stringcourse carvings, paterae, bell motifs, and cusped inner panels. Above each arched recess lies a carved lintel. A small opening pierces the gable wall, beneath which a bracketed cornice and another archway spring from moulded capitals. A heavy plinth reinforces the lower gateway, while the top is embattled and loop holed to strengthen defence.

Old Royal Fort (Jaunpur Fort) Located east of the northern bank of the Gomti Bridge, this fort was built or rebuilt by Firoz Shah Tughlaq (where Kerar Kot was located). Architecturally, it is quadrangular and surrounded by a stone wall. The main entrance to the fort is built in the portico style, accessed through a narrow passage cut into an artificial mound. The eastern gate of the fort has a projecting balcony. Munim Khan constructed an external court, which is made of beautiful and sturdy stone. One of its gates was primarily built for security purposes. Inside the fort are two main buildings. The first building houses a bathhouse, a replica of a Turkish bathhouse, built during the reign of Nawab Ibrahim. The second building, in the form of a mosque, was built by Ibrahim Naib Barbak (brother of Firoz Shah Tughlaq). The mosque, 130 feet long and 22 feet wide, is constructed using stone pillars dating back to the Hindu period. A stone pillar with an inscription is placed at the main entrance, which is said to be dated 1766 AD.Read More

Underwhelming experience: Despite the historical name, there’s not much to explore or get excited about inside the fort. Feels like a small park: Mostly a peaceful, green, open area rather than a rich historical site. Limited attractions: No major structures, exhibits, or engaging spots to spend much time. Under maintenance: Several areas appear neglected or in upkeep, which takes away from the visit. Religious activity: Some Muslims come here to offer prayers or perform rituals. Good location: It’s within walking distance of the Gomti River. Nice viewpoint: Being on a higher spot, you can see parts of the city from here. Ticket price: ₹25 for offline tickets, ₹20 if booked online.Read More

Bastions with view of the river and the famous Shahi bridge with its 28 pavillions built in the reign of moghul emperor Akbar. 300 Rupies. Not far from the also very interesting mosque.Read More

It is very beautiful place for walking and good seen. built by Firuz Shah Tughlaq in 1362 A.D. on the banks of the Gomti River, is a major historical monument in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh.
