“Karkis of Kumaon” is a research-led, multidisciplinary visual archive exploring how memory, material, culture and family histories shape our sense of identity and belonging. Rooted in a family’s story from the hills of Uttarakhand, the work traces the porous line between outsider and insider, asking what it means to belong, what gets carried forward, and most importantly, how we choose to remember.

Through photographs, stories and material memories, the archive invites viewers to encounter the act of remembering something long lost: a place, a person, a feeling, or perhaps even a neighbourhood. What begins as one family’s archive becomes an invitation to reflect on the places, memories and stories that make us feel at home.
