Dr Malini Roy, Head of Visual Arts at the British Library, presents the networks of European and Nawabi patrons and collectors that shaped the artistic culture of 18th-century Lucknow. The talk examines the distinctive courtly culture that developed under the patronage of the Nawabs of Awadh alongside British and European residents at the court.
Drawing on examples from calligraphy, decorative arts, portraiture, and illustrated manuscripts, the presentation traces the cross-cultural influences that shaped artistic practices and contributed to a distinctive Awadhi style.
The presentation is followed by a conversation between Dr Malini Roy and Ira Mukhoty.
