KNMA presents On The Nature of Moving Things with artist Sanath Sugathan, as part of the Artist in Me series. The workshop is designed to help participants re-look at the everyday world of motion, gestures, and rhythms with a renewed sense of attention. Using storyboarding as a medium, participants will explore how to capture fleeting movements and transform them into visual stories that express both perception and imagination. Inspired by the the world of the Moomins, where small, almost unnoticed details of daily life open doors to playful storytelling, this workshop encourages participants to observe, reflect, and create narratives from the ordinary.

Day 1 will focus on developing a sensitivity to motion and rhythm through close observation. Participants will engage in drawing and sketching exercises that help them register gestures, repetitive actions, and overlooked patterns. These fragments will then be arranged into sequences, becoming the foundation for a storyboard. The day emphasizes on imagination as a way of making meaning from the simplest of movements.

Day 2 will extend these exercises into creating coherent visual arcs and storyboards. Guided by artist Sanath Sugathan, participants will learn to structure their sketches into narrative sequences that convey a sense of flow, time, and atmosphere. Through this process, they will experiment with how stories can emerge from observed realities and imaginative interventions. The workshop concludes with participants making their own short, personal storyboards, capturing the relationship between motion, memory, and storytelling.

About the Artist

Sanath Sugathan (b. 1998, Kerala) is a visual artist living and working in Kerala, India. A graduate in Painting from the College of Fine Arts, Trivandrum (2022), his practice spans photographs, paintings, picture books, writing, and found objects. Sanath’s work often engages with familial relationships and the emotional residues they leave behind, tracing memory while reflecting on intimacy, fragility, and tenderness. He has been part of exhibitions such as The Flying Goat Art Show 2.0 (2022), It is Now (2023), and the upcoming duo exhibition Strangers We Know (2025) at Neighbour Gallery. In 2024, he participated in the More Than Words masterclass by Parag & Big Little Book Awards.
