About

Centred on Tyeb Mehta’s drawings and sketches, the workshop will become a meeting point between art and mathematics. Facilitated by Anni Kumari, it will explore this intersection through the playful application of concepts from coordinate and fractal geometry to the understanding of space as reflected in Mehta's works. The workshop will be preceded by a walkthrough of the exhibition and followed by a light brunch.

This workshop explores how the ORIGIN serves as the starting point from which forms emerge, evolve and come into being in the works of the pioneering Modern artist, Tyeb Mehta. This is a workshop for adults to discover points of intersection between art and mathematics through the playful application of concepts from coordinate and fractal geometry to the understanding of space as reflected in the works of Tyeb Mehta. A deep dive into Mehta’s practise reveals that underneath the simple flat forms in his painting there is a mesh of lines, grids, planes, coordinates, tangents and deflections that allow him both, the flexibility and the clarity to visualize forms in constant movement in space. Using simple geometrical tools like scale, protractor, compass and graph paper, we will trace how a combination of defined curves-parabola, hyperbola and ellipse along with lines and shapes, can generate an interesting range of animated forms. In this guided workshop, participants will create multi-layered drawings by plotting coordinates on graph paper and will discover what happens when the points are connected and layered with a series of overlapping drawings of a form in movement as seen from different viewing points.
