Turup presents "Swargarohon Paala," and PlayHouse Kolkata brings to the stage "Manasi 2."
Kissewala's "Amal Kaantir Paala" offers a captivating narrative set against the backdrop of rural Ireland, where the original play by Marie Jones, "Stones In His Pockets," garnered critical acclaim, including a Laurence Olivier Award. The play portrays the upheaval in a small village when a Hollywood film crew arrives to shoot a historical blockbuster. This Bengali adaptation offers a clever twist: the Hollywood crew is replaced by a prominent Bengali production house, descending upon the town of Ghuni to film their next big hit.
The story centers around two local characters, Amal and Kaanti, whose excitement is palpable as they are cast as extras in the cinematic spectacle. The allure of Tollywood's glamor has long been a dream for them, and now they have the opportunity to be a part of it all—to sing, dance, engage in dramatic fights, and live out their fantasies as heroes on screen. However, as they are confined to the fringes of the set, merely as background actors, they must confront the reality of their roles. The narrative asks whether they will be able to overlook their own difficult lives to embrace the festive spirit of the film set, or if they will be forced to face the harsher realities that lurk behind the scenes of the glittering Tollywood industry. Lights, camera, action—what unfolds for Amal and Kanti is a tale of dreams and disillusionment.

Phele Asha Megahertz & Love in the time of War
Show Date: 24/12/2023
Place: Gyan Manch
Time: 12noon - 3PM
Thakurnagar Pratidhwani Sanskritik Sanstha's latest Bengali theatre piece, 'Phele Asha Megahertz' (The Megahertz we left behind), is a remarkable creation by Bhaskar Mukherjee, whose multifaceted talent shines as the writer, director, choreographer, musician, and set and light designer. A scholar and celebrated figure from Rabindra Bharati University, Mukherjee's narrative centers on a protagonist whose life is deeply intertwined with music.
From an early age, music becomes the lens through which he experiences emotions and the world around him. Reflecting on his sixties, he recounts his upbringing surrounded by the radio sounds, which fuels his love for music. The play deftly interweaves his memories with India's broader cultural and political milieu in the 1970s, including the rise of All India Radio and its influence.
Humour is woven through his school days and romantic entanglements, leading to a poignant climax where a youthful obsession with a serendipitous sight leads to heartbreak and upheaval against political turmoil. The protagonist's journey ultimately brings him to an asylum where a radio once again becomes his solace in the absence of music, helping him reconnect with his humanity.
The ingenious set design transforms simple props like a mosquito net and a ladder into multifunctional storytelling elements, illustrating various stages and scenes of the protagonist's life journey. Raju Dhar delivers a stellar performance in the lead role, his acting prowess guiding the audience through laughter and tears. The strong ensemble cast supports the narrative, bringing authenticity and depth to the play.
The production has garnered acclaim from noted actors, actresses, and directors, who have expressed their admiration on social media, making 'Phele Asha Megahertz' a celebrated addition to contemporary Bengali theatre.
