G5A in collaboration with Institut Français presents Agnès Varda: A Retrospective

A tribute to Jacques Demy, The Creatures tells two stories: a couple’s life and the birth of a novel. Edgar (Michel Piccoli) and Mylène (Catherine Deneuve) live like hermits. Even though they struggle to communicate, they love each other, and this love will gift them with a child. 

As for Edgar’s novel, it seems to write itself out of nothing, while Edgars wanders alone across the island of Noirmoutier. On his strolls, he always happens upon ordinary people. Through Edgar’s imagination they are transformed into the “creatures” of his novel, much like the pawns of a chess game he invents. Those creatures will come to life during a closely matched game of chess, in which Edgar does not only fight for his beliefs, but also for love.

About Agnès Varda: A Retrospective:

Join us at the Warehouse in celebrating one of the most beloved and iconic filmmakers, Agnès Varda. Retrospectively, considered to have kickstarted the French New Wave or La Nouvelle Vague, she was associated with the directors that constituted the ‘Left Bank Cinema’ faction.

Over the course of her career, we see the evolution of her ideas through her inquiry into feminism. Agnès Varda created a niche for herself by straddling the fine line between fiction and non-fiction in her films. Informed by her prior practice in still photography, she became known for her provocative, inventive, and unique way of filmmaking which did not conform to existing traditional conventions. Relying on intuition, curiosity, and a pursuit of finding beauty where it is least expected; her films are experienced like streams of emotions - also known as the cinema of senses.

With a career spanning seven decades, Agnès Varda carved a place for herself in the upper echelons of filmmakers globally with her unflinching commitment to her unique vision.
