About

Star in the Sky is a deeply moving play directed by Sri Vamsi Matta & is inspired by Dr. M. Suguna Rao’s Telugu story. Aakasam lo Oka Nakshatram, (Star in the Sky) reflects on the life and tragic death of Rohith Vemula.

Weaving together themes of identity, discrimination, resistance, and grief, the play offers a poignant exploration of the Dalit experience in an unequal society.

Narrated by Matthews, a History PhD student at HCU, the story follows a young Astrophysics student whose fascination with the cosmos is overshadowed by the harsh realities of caste oppression. His yearning to break free from societal constraints forms the emotional core of the play, while his tragic end underscores the systemic injustices Dalits face in academic and social spaces. Infused with elements of magic realism, Star in the Sky brings resistance, myth, and memory to life.

Accompanying Matthews are three musicians—Yesu, Bhanu, and Seenu—whose music and sharp-witted commentary deepen the narrative, offering a satirical yet searing reflection on caste, power, and history. This play is an act of remembrance and defiance, a call to witness, and a testament to the enduring spirit of those who dare to dream beyond the limits imposed upon them.
