About the Event

Saturday Family Workshop

Stories We Share invites families to collaborate across generations — grandparents, parents, and children — in mapping their family lineage. Together, they will trace their roots, share memories, and create a living archive that celebrates the stories connecting them through time.

This workshop invites families to explore how memory, time, and relationships can be mapped visually - much like Saba Hasan’s sculptural books that hold traces of what is both present and absent. Drawing from Hasan’s process of folding, stitching, and embedding fragments into old books, participants will reimagine their own family histories as layered compositions of stories and emotions.

The session draws inspiration from Hasan’s reflection that “the book’s fragility has great powers of subversion.” In the same spirit, families will work with fragility, of fading memories, incomplete stories, and generational shifts, to create their own visual family trees. Each drawing becomes a page of remembrance and renewal, revealing how what is erased, rewritten, or preserved continues to define the narrative of belonging.

By translating family stories into imagery, participants learn how art can act as both archive and rebellion, preserving the ephemeral and resisting the loss of personal histories.

Audience Takeaways:

* Reflect on the notions of presence, absence, and preservation in family memory

* Engage with Saba Hasan’s process of transforming books into sculptural narratives

* Learn how visual storytelling can act as a tool for archiving and reclaiming personal histories

* Create a layered family tree that functions as both artwork and living document of lineage and care.

While you’re here, we invite you to also explore KNMA’s ongoing exhibitions — please touch gently: zines, comics, ephemerajo ġāyab hai, aur hāzir bhi – book sculptures of Saba Hasan Extraordinary Line; and Moomin 80 – The Door is Always Open, the first-ever Moomin presentation in India.
