Writing Stories That Move Before They Ask with Vishaka George

About the event

Most communication today asks readers to act before it's earned their attention. This workshop flips that order. It teaches participants to write from curiosity, centre the dignity of the people in their stories, and let a reader feel something before being asked to do anything: donate, share, believe, vote.

Drawing on years of long-form journalism, rural reporting, and communications work across climate, human-wildlife conflict, and migration, this session is about crafting evocative stories that move readers, not messaging strategies built solely around eliciting a response. The former earns the credibility that makes the latter possible.

What Participants Will Learn

- How to move from a statistic or headline to a person without slipping into sentimentality or exploitation

- How the same story changes shape across formats (a caption, an appeal, a report, a conversation) while keeping its dignity intact

- How curiosity, not pity, is what actually earns a reader's trust

- How to write a piece of their own, get real feedback, and leave with something usable

Core craft - 60 min - Translating a fact into a person: hands-on exercise
