Years after the initial virus outbreak, survivors in a post-apocalyptic Britain struggle to stay alive as infected roam the land. Dr. Kelson maintains a memorial ossuary called the Bone Temple while trying to understand the infected and preserve what remains of humanity. Spike, a young survivor, is drawn into a violent cult led by Sir Jimmy Crystal, forcing him to confront brutality and faith. The arrival of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple brings a rare spectacle to British cinema: a fourth instalment in a much-loved franchise that manages to surpass its predecessors. This might be controversial but when talking about its relevance, it is. On release on January 16, Nia DaCosta takes over as director and delivers a gripping, vigorous film that stands out not just for its horror elements but for its exploration of human nature and ambition.
The film picks up after the previous chapter, following young Spike (Alfie Williams) as he leaves the safety of Holy Island for the dangerous mainland. He is drawn by rumours of a mysterious doctor who has built a monument to humanity’s losses: the bone temple. The landscape is bleak, but the film’s energy is anything but, thanks to stellar performances and a script that refuses to conform to expectation.

The creator of the Bone Temple, Ralph Fiennes’s Dr Ian Kelson, is a standout, bringing quiet resolve and eccentricity, illustrated by Dr Kelson’s orange skin from self-administered iodine treatments. The doctor’s mission is more than survival; he seeks meaning in tragedy, having created an ossuary-monument to honour the dead. The bone temple stands as a haunting testament to humanity’s resilience and folly.


The tension is fuelled less by zombies and more by the unpredictable actions of the living. Zombies, once the main threat, are now almost a background detail. This shift brings new intensity, as viewers confront the dangers of fanaticism and the chaos of unchecked power. The real conflict emerges between sentient human beings – each with their own philosophies, fears, and ambitions.

Chi Lewis-Parry appears as Samson, the so-called alpha zombie. His transformation moves beyond the usual monster caricature. Dr Kelson’s gentle approach to Samson and his efforts to understand rather than destroy him add a depth rarely found in horror sequels.

The supporting cast excels, with Erin Kellyman portraying a disciple of Sir Lord Jimmy who refuses to be merely a follower. Each actor brings a unique energy, making the ensemble dynamic and engaging. The interplay between Fiennes, O’Connell, Williams, and Lewis-Parry keeps the story moving at a brisk pace.

Director Nia DaCosta blends kinetic camerawork reminiscent of Danny Boyle’s original vision with a newfound patience and gravity. Every frame, whether bursting with action or steeped in quiet contemplation, is imbued with longing, not for the lost world, but for a better one yet to come. Her tone emerges clearly, while respecting the one set by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland.
At the film’s heart are characters searching for hope in despair. Both Spike and Dr Kelson try to see the world differently, their stories intertwined with those of their adversaries.

As a middle chapter in a planned trilogy, The Bone Temple stands as a powerful, ambitious work. The narrative never settles into a predictable rhythm, keeping audiences on edge with shifts in tone and unexpected turns that mirror the franchise’s evolution.

For fans and newcomers alike, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is a rare achievement. It is frightening, ambitious, and surprisingly moving – never losing sight of the human heart at the centre of the chaos. Its combination of visual richness, powerful performances, and thoughtful direction make it a standout in modern British horror.

If 28 Years Later which came out last year was startling in its visual imagination, its cinematic leaps and its sublime use of Ralph Fiennes’s talent, this second part is more contained and less ambitious. But as a placeholder for another sequel, The Bone Temple is just the right amount of modest — taking the story forward and giving its characters a developmental arc.

Danny Boyle has taken a backseat for this one, handing over the directing reins to Nia DaCosta, with the rest of the behind-the-scenes team almost the same.

The last film left us restless in anticipation of what was to follow for the boy called Spike (Williams), who had survived being attacked and falling into the ranks of “the infected” or zombies by the skin of his teeth. The ones who came between Spike and those chasing him then were a gang of Clockwork Orange-like maniacal youngsters, led by a magnetic “Sir Jimmy Crystal” (O’Connell).
There is much more blood, a lot of gore, and quite a bit of Satanic hocus pocus in The Bone Temple. All of it involves Sir Jimmy. Some is intentional as the delusional O’Connell struggles to keep track of his own incoherence. However, it goes on for far too long for a film whose strength is not the talking, but the dispensing with it.

Again, as long as Fiennes occupies the screen as Dr Ian Kelson — who has survived the infected for 28 years by keeping his wits, books on medicine, and bottles and bottles of morphine and iodine about — The Bone Temple is at its most powerful.

Just watch him switch between his interactions with an infected alpha male he has befriended and named Samson (Lewis-Parry), and his encounter with the madness of Sir Jimmy. Fiennes’s performance to The Iron Maiden’s The Number of the Beast is breathtaking, a Dumbledore who could be a Voldemort; or is it the other way around? Even those in on the act may doubt themselves.
If Williams has less to do than the earlier 28 Years Later, the role of the wounded misfit here is played to equal parts gentleness and ferocity by Kellyman.|
The Bone Temple ends with a pleasing surprise for the fans of this series, and on the note of optimism that had existed post-World War II. The world believed then that it had put ideas such as populism, fascism, nationalism behind for good.

The sheer insanity of the 28 Years Later universe is something a viewer can never comprehend right from the start. As you watch the film, it goes crazier than you can imagine, and the ability to do that every time you watch a film has been the biggest positive. The possibilities are endless for the post-apocalyptic horror film, and it takes that to its advantage. With Spike’s induction into the Jimmy gang, the fear of the unknown awaits him. Alfie Williams is able to bring the raw emotion of a child in a cutthroat world with grit in every step. But the real winner is Ralph Fiennes, a survival pro medic who is standing tall, despite the world’s every effort to take him down.

The music, although almost jarring at first, will make its way into your heart and mind with each passing scene. The poster depicted the craze on Dr. Ian becomes its crescendo, a culmination of loneliness, fear, and the absurdity of the Jimmy cult. 
Ralph Fiennes is the unrivaled King once again with his red-bodied plans and determination to survive, which ends up going for a toss once he meets Spike. Alfie Williams is a close second. Bringing his best at all times. Jack O'Connell maintains his psychopathic behavior and manages to keep it going right to the very last second, making for another commendable performance.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s the best part about it.
