James Cameron, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno's story is simple and emotional. James Cameron, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver's screenplay is peppered with lots of emotional and dramatic moments that keep the interest going. But this time, the writing also falls short in some places. The dialogues are conversational. A few words are self-censored and muted by the makers.

James Cameron's direction is splendid. Yet again, he strikes a balance – he depicts the visual grandeur in all its glory, but at the same time, he makes sure that the viewers are invested in the principal characters, moved by their plight and rejoice during their victories. This time, the tension begins very soon after which James goes back to his original style of building up and setting up the premise for an impactful second half. This portion is worth it as new bonds are formed, especially revolving around Miles. The scene where Spider is resurrected is awe-inspiring. The second half is where the action goes to another level. A few scenes will lead to claps and whistles.

On the flipside, AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH looks similar to AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER, especially in the landscape depicted and also the happenings of the second half. What made the second part stand out is that the fight and the setting were very different from AVATAR [2009]. This same factor is not present here. Hence, viewers get a been-there-done-that feeling. Moreover, AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER had a charm as it arrived 13 years after its predecessor. AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH releases three years after the second part and this time, things look a bit repetitive. In fact, it won’t be wrong to say that some sort of fatigue factor has also set in. Lastly, a crucial character gets a raw deal, especially towards the end.
Sam Worthington, as always, delivers an understated yet bravura performance. Zoe Saldaña, however, is the scene-stealer. She gets her vulnerable act right, but watch out for her when she activates her angry-and-action mode. She is the most mass-appealing character and her scenes will be lapped up the most. Stephen Lang is suave and worthy. Oona Chaplin is a great addition to the madness and does well. Sigourney Weaver, this time, has a lot more to do and is impressive. Jack Champion is adorable. His character is at the centre stage this time and he faces a lot of challenges and yet, the way he doesn't let his goodness go will be quite appreciated. Britain Dalton is fine, though he gets a limited scope. Kate Winslet (Ronal) leaves a mark in a small role. Others like Trinity Bliss, Cliff Curtis (Tonowari), Bailey Bass (Tsireya), Edie Falco (General Frances Ardmore) and Brendan Cowell (Captain Mick Scoresby) lend able support. Jemaine Clement (Dr Ian Garvin) is a surprise this time.
On the whole, AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH is a visually stunning, emotionally stirring big-screen spectacle. At the same time, the film does lose a bit of its novelty because certain set-pieces and landscapes feel too close to AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER, and the fatigue factor is hard to ignore after a three-year gap. In India, it will also have to swim against the strong DHURANDHAR wave, which is dominating screens and audience conversation. Yet, AVATAR’s biggest advantage is that this isn’t the kind of film viewers would want to wait and watch at home; the scale, VFX, and immersive action demand a theatrical outing. Hence, despite the hurdles, it will find its share of audience and is well-placed to emerge as the biggest Hollywood hit of the year.

Picking up from Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in James Cameron’s epic saga, follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their children as they battle not only the returning human colonisers but also a formidable new threat — Varang (Oona Chaplin), the ruthless leader of the fiery Mangkwan clan. Matters escalate when Varang forms an alliance with the humans, setting the stage for yet another war on Pandora.
That James Cameron is a visionary filmmaker is beyond dispute. His groundbreaking work on Avatar(2009) revolutionised immersive 3D cinema, transporting audiences into the lush world of Pandora and redefining big-screen spectacle. His technical brilliance and ambition remain unmatched, and expectations from him are understandably sky-high.
Avatar 3 aims to be more expansive, introducing a new warrior clan and widening the franchise’s mythology. However, despite its ambition, the film feels bloated and overlong at 3 hours and 17 minutes. The narrative runs in circles, recycling familiar themes of clan conflict, spiritual awakening, and colonial resistance without offering anything new.
As the focus shifts from Jake and Neytiri to their children, the storytelling grows increasingly repetitive. Varang is introduced with promise — a fierce and commanding antagonist — but is soon reduced to a disappointingly underwritten, almost ornamental presence. What could have been a compelling villain arc fizzles out, weakening the central conflict.
Cameron’s visual mastery remains extraordinary; every frame is meticulously crafted, and breathtaking. Yet visuals alone are not enough. The film lacks emotional depth and narrative urgency, making large portions feel sleep-inducing. In the absence
Of a strong story and character development, Avatar: Fire and Ash becomes a hollow spectacle — visually dazzling but emotionally inert.
It’s also worth noting that the film begins midway, directly continuing from The Way of Water. Viewers who haven’t seen the previous installment may find it difficult to connect with the characters or follow the plot.
If you’re a diehard Avatar fan, this entry may feel like the weakest link in the franchise, but it still bears James Cameron’s signature visual magic that comes alive in IMAX. For everyone else, the stunning imagery may not be enough to justify the exhausting runtime and recycled storytelling.

James Cameron returns to Pandora with Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third chapter in his expansive sci-fi saga. With, Fire and Ash, he once again proves why the franchise remains cinema’s gold standard for visual immersion. The scale is immense, the imagery overwhelming, and the ambition unmistakable. Yet beneath the molten landscapes and ash-filled skies, you get an emotionally effective though frustratingly predictable story.
The film follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaa) as they continue to protect their family amid renewed human aggression and rising tensions among Pandora’s clans, following the events of Avatar: The Way of Water. This time, the conflict stretches beyond the forest and sea tribes to introduce the Mangkwan, also known as the Ash People, a fire-dwelling clan shaped by volcanic terrain and brutal survival instincts, led by Varang (Oona Chaplin). Their arrival complicates the long-established moral binary of the Avatar universe, suggesting that not every Na’vi culture is rooted in harmony or spiritual idealism
The emotional core of Fire and Ash is driven by loss. The scars of previous battles loom large, shaping every decision Jake and Neytiri make. Cameron leans heavily into themes of grief, rage, and endurance, especially through Neytiri, whose anger simmers dangerously close to the surface. Saldaa once again emerges as the film’s emotional backbone, delivering a performance that is raw, feral, and deeply human. Her grief feels personal, and when the film pauses to sit with her pain, it briefly hints at something more daring.
In terms of narrative, Fire and Ash, remains ordinary, almost borderline melodramatic. Dare I say, an uncalled-for reminder of several Bollywood melodramas, without the songs. The film repeatedly builds tension, layering emotional beats and moral dilemmas in a way that suggests an impending narrative shift, a moment that might truly upend expectations. Instead, the story pulls back at the last moment, opting for a safer choice, which broadly leaves you unsatisfied.

Many of the franchise’s expected beats return. A displaced family? Check. Uneasy alliances? Yes. Internal cultural conflicts and a climactic confrontation between nature and industrial destruction? Touch! These elements are executed with technical confidence, but they rarely surprise. The emotional arcs echo earlier Avatar films so closely that a sense of dj vu sets in, especially across the film’s sprawling runtime.
Where Fire and Ash undeniably succeeds is in its technical mastery. Cameron remains unmatched when it comes to world-building on a grand scale. The volcanic regions of Pandora are strikingly realised, rivers of lava, scorched forests, and skies thick with ash create a harsh, unforgiving beauty. The visual effects are not merely polished; they are immersive, demanding to be seen in theatres. Aerial battles glow with heat and menace, while quieter scenes use firelight and shadow to deepen the film’s sombre tone.

The supporting cast, including Stephen Lang, slips comfortably back into familiar territory, though their arcs largely serve the overarching plot rather than pushing character development. Worthington’s Jake is now a more measured, weary leader, shaped by consequence rather than idealism. The evolution makes sense, but the performance lacks the urgency that once defined the character.

One of the film’s most promising ideas lies in its portrayal of the Ash People. Unlike earlier Na’vi clans, they are not framed as noble counterpoints to human invaders, but as a community hardened by loss and capable of cruelty as much as resilience. Unfortunately, the film never fully commits to exploring their tension, folding the Ash People back into the franchise’s familiar conflict structure.
At nearly three and a half hours, Fire and Ash, demands patience but franchise loyalists know what they are in for.

Ultimately, Avatar: Fire and Ash is both impressive and restrained. It promises combustion but largely settles for a slow burn. Cameron lights the match, builds the heat and fills the frame with molten wonder, yet never quite lets the fire rage. The spectacle dazzles, the emotions flicker, but the storytelling stays contained. Pandora still glows, but this time it smoulders more than it explodes.

Air, water done, we are into ‘fire and ash’ as James Cameron continues his odyssey into Pandora, an inhabited exomoon several light years away from Earth, that remains as breathtakingly imaginative as ever. However, you may find yourself wishing it also took some breaths – as Cameron builds and builds on what is now a familiar template.

At 3 hours and 17 minutes, it is the longest of the three Avatars. As we soar and swim with the Sully family (the Na’vis have fully taken on their American name), they wrestle with the same dilemmas of right and wrong, clan and the ‘other’, whether to go with daggers or bow-and-arrow into the many fights to the finish, and how to summon amazingly loyal animals as accomplices.

Worthington, Saldana, Weaver, Lang, Winslet and Ribisi return in their roles as the main protagonists on the side of good, bad and, interestingly, grey. The technical aspects are flawless as glimpses of the actors come through in their rendering as the humanoid blue-skinned, lithe-limbed Na’vis, particularly Worthington as Jake Sully or Toruk Makto, which in Na’vi translates to ‘Rider of the Last Shadow’.
Zaldana as his wife Neyteri is less of a warrior princess now than a bitter mother, mourning about her son who died in the last Avatar – The Way of Water – with hate brewing in her about the “pink skins (humans)”. That also transfers into her feelings about Spider (Champion), the human child who has accepted their family as his own.

Yes, Cameron remains very much rooted in his imagination of Pandora as a world inhabited by tribal-like clans with their innate “wisdom”, particularly about Nature and how to work with it, who are threatened by the evil, greedy, exploitative White man. The latter is after the elusive ‘amrita (yes, it is exactly what you are thinking)’, which is worth millions of dollars.

You have to wonder how many millions though, given the investment being poured into it, with a ship full of scientists and soldier-types permanently parked in Pandora for the hunt, sending out recce missions armed to the teeth at frequent intervals, and brushing off the toll in terms of men and machines with equanimity.
The one person who single handedly shakes that equanimity, enlivening Fire and Ash, is a villain with sex, spice and all things vice – Varang (Chaplin), the chief of the Mangkwan clan. The Mangkwans are the ‘Ash people’, and Varang has “controlled how to make fire” – hence the film’s name.

Varang is explicit in her desires, be it looting the Na’vis, acquiring guns that can kill faster, further and more, than her deadly braid and blade, and bedding Quaritch (Lang), who is still revenging against Jake for breaking their “Marine code”.

Varang and Quaritch, who brings many a laugh to the proceedings, make exciting allies and a torrid pair, and you want to see more of them together than the Sullys, their largely predictable duels, the family’s familiar arc, and some tedious dialogues.Which again goes to prove that even as there is perhaps no better auteur at creating a world, putting it in danger from the sky or the seas or saving it like Cameron, he may want to heed Jake’s advice: “This world goes much deeper”, and it may be time to “see differently”.

Jake and Neytiri have not come to terms with the passing of their firstborn son, Neteyam. But after losing their home, they’ve begun settling in with the Metkayina clan, while their wounds continue to heal. Their second son, Lo'ak, still blames himself for his brother’s death, but the loom of incoming war persists. They face off against a fierce Na'vi tribe, the Mangkwan clan, who do not believe in their goddess and are set on the path of rebellion. The Ash People join hands with the Omatikaya clan’s enemy, Colonel Miles Quaritch, and try their best to take down the Sullys as well as capture Spider. 
James Cameron has done a fabulous job in keeping the world of Pandora alive and running. Close to a couple of decades in the making, Avatar continues to be a visual masterpiece that not many have been able to replicate or even come close to. Thankfully, that remains constant once again. The filmmaker manages to keep the essence of the otherworldly feeling alive throughout the course of Avatar: Fire and Ash. 

Another commendable factor is the relationship between Jake and Neytiri, which goes through a rollercoaster of emotions during the film. It shows just how sapient the world-building has been and taken form in Avatar. They have their differences and their love-filled moments, and gladly, there’s not too much of it. 

Finally, towards the end, the actual fight that the plot leads up to is worth the wait. With multiple action scenes and possible losses for the Na’vi tribe bringing the fun, you cannot help but root for the leads and cheer in happiness as they take charge of the bad guys. 
With no passing to mourn and an obvious storyline at play, the third instalment in the Avatar franchise will not blow your socks off your feet. It takes a comfortable seat at the cinema hall for 197 minutes, which is truly far too long, for some expected cards to show. Children and fans of the Pandora world would surely enjoy getting sucked back into the universe, but with hardly any Ash lying around, we wonder if just the Fire would quench the thirst among viewers.


James Cameron is a man driven by meticulousness. Don’t just be swayed by the grandeur and ambition of his films but also be swayed by the way he crafts his opuses. He made the heartbreaking and walloping blockbuster Titanic in 1997 and then didn’t make a film for more than a decade. There was no social media back then so not too many people knew the reason for his surprising disappearance. The man immersed himself into making what would later be called as one of the most breathtaking films in cinema history- Avatar. The first film came out in 2009. We were in December. The next one came out 13 years later. We were still in December. And part three drops this Friday. And it’s still December.
The good news is that the third film in the franchise, called Avatar: Fire and Ash, attempts to dig deeper into the world of the Na’vi people. Pandora has bigger conflicts to battle, both inner and external. The Na’vi are no less than humans. They too get bruised, battle their way as life happens, and what connects the family together is the kind of bond we usually see in the good old tearjerkers. No matter how evolved the landscape of cinema is in terms of technology and scale, the emotional turf always remains the same. The biggest hurdle for the Pandoras this time is the seductive and smoldering Varang (Oona Chaplin), the Na’vi leader of the volcano-dwelling Mangkwan clan. She gets an impressively staged introduction scene where she effortlessly establishes her joy of seeing destruction and mayhem.
We also get moments of humor laced with precision. Spider, the outsider in this gargantuan world, finally begins to breathe without his mask. This tender moment comes right after he’s asked to leave what he felt was his own. But there’s a minor problem. Since this is our third time seeing these spectacularly crafted species, the novelty and adrenaline rush seems to be fading away. And the first half feels like a slow burn. Cameron knows it too. He forces you to be seated right till the last moment. There could be a litany of complaints and one second of exhilaration to put you back right there. And this is far from over. Cameron has two more movies right up his sleeves.
This is a dazzling and daring dream that took more than a decade to witness its fruition. The man has made a legacy out of fearlessness. He revels in dazzling his audience with destruction. Look at his Titanic, look at the Terminator movie. The concoction of skillful visuals and visceral energy results in a heady cocktail that continues to keep you intoxicated for a long time. Avatar: Fire And Ash does pale in comparison to the last two films of the franchise, and the filmmaker’s previous films too, but since we are only in the middle of the dream he has seen, let’s first wait too see how it all ends. The internet says part five comes out in 2031. So if this franchise was worth going all ballsy is an answer we all have to wait for, even if it means going through fire and ash.
