AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER is the story of a man going to insane lengths to keep his family safe. More than a decade has passed since the events of the first film. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) are happily residing together with fellow Na'vi’s. They are parents to elder son Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), younger son Lo'ak (Britain Dalton) and daughter Tuktirey aka Tuk (Trinity Jo-Li Bliss). They have adopted Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), who was created from the avatar of the deceased Dr Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver). These four kids are good friends with Miles Socorro aka Spider (Jake Champion), the child of none other than Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), the antagonist of the first part who dies in the end. Though Spider is a human, he spends his time with the Na’vis and pretends to be like them. All is going well until one day, the humans aka ‘Sky People’ once again descend on Pandora. In a year’s time, they build a huge settlement, bigger than what was constructed by them last time. And this time, Miles comes back from the dead. He gets resurrected by the RDA (Resources Development Administration) as a Recombinant, that is, an avatar embedded with the memories of human. The aim of Miles' avatar is to take revenge from Jake Sully and Neytiri. The Na’vi community have been causing damage to RDA’s structures and railway lines. The RDA forces too hit back. Jake feels that it’s him that they want to defeat and for this reason, the rest of the Na’vi population shouldn’t suffer. Hence, he and his family leave the Na’vi settlement in the forest. They travel hundreds of miles and reach the village of the Metkayina tribe, headed by Tonowari (Cliff Curtis) and Ronal (Kate Winslet). This tribe are ‘reef people’ who worship the sea. Their bodies are more suited for activities underwater. Hence, when Jake and his family ask them for refuge, they at first deny it since they feel their bodies are not meant for their lifestyle. But soon, they are allowed to assimilate and they slowly learn the way of life of Metkayina. Miles, meanwhile, kidnaps Spider and is trying his best to find out where Jake, Neytiri and their kids have fled. What happens next forms the rest of the film.
James Cameron, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno's story is simple and a bit clichéd. But James Cameron, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver's screenplay is splendid. The way they have treated this story and added a lot of depth, as well as entertainment, is praiseworthy. The dialogues are simple yet sharp.

James Cameron's direction is splendid. The genius filmmaker once again gets it right. He takes his own sweet time to establish the world and the conflict, and in the third act, he goes all out in giving viewers a paisa-vasool experience. As expected, he handled the scale flawlessly. We had seen the fascinating world of Pandora in the first part. Here, shows a different part of the moon and the underwater element enhances the visual impact. But more than that, he scores on the emotional front. A very interesting angle of the outcast is tackled and it’ll touch the hearts of the viewers. Thankfully, it’s shown in such a simple manner that not just classes, but even the masses will be able to relate to and comprehend it.
On the flipside, nothing much happens in the first half. Like the first part, James Cameron does the build-up and helps viewers understand the world before commencing the action bit in the second half. While the intent is understandable, one still does get a bit impatient especially due to the long length. This 192-minute-long film should have been shorter by 10 minutes, especially in the first half. A few developments are not convincing, like Aonung (Filip Geljo) turning into a bully all of a sudden. Also, the way the Sully family escape without feeling sorry for Spider or even regret not saving him is not easy to digest. The backstory of the tulkun, Payakan, is not presented neatly. The makers should have taken care of this aspect as it forms an important part of the film.

AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER starts on a fine note. The scene where the Na’vi community blasts the railway scene is entertaining. Miles finding the dead body of his human avatar and realizing how he died is well thought of. The scene thereafter is nail-biting. The entry of Tsireya (Bailey Bass) is eye-catching and the scene where she tells Lo'ak that his heart is beating fast is too funny. The entry sequence of Payakan is heroic. Post-interval, the film takes time in a little more build up. But the pre-climax fight is where there will be a frenzy in cinemas. Just when you think that the fight is done, you’ll be in for a surprise as there’s one more action sequence in the climax and it’s also worth watching. The film ends with the hint of the third part in the offing.
Speaking of performances, Sam Worthington yet again puts up a very impressive act. The last time, he played the role of an amateur who’s struggling to learn the ways of the Navi’s. This time, he’s supposed to be the mature one and also the protector of his family. He brings this aspect alive nicely. Zoe Saldaña is terrific yet again. Her act in the last 30 minutes is splendid. Stephen Lang is too good as the antagonist yet again. Sigourney Weaver and Jake Champion have a significant part and leave a huge mark. Jamie Flatters and Britain Dalton are fair but it’ll be difficult for the audience to distinguish between the two. Trinity Jo-Li Bliss and Cliff Curtis get limited scope. Kate Winslet does fine but looks quite unrecognizable. In fact, audiences might not even realize that they are seeing the TITANIC [1997] star on screen. Bailey Bass is cute and does a good job. Filip Geljo is passable.

Simon Franglen's music exhilarates the impact manifold. Russell Carpenter's cinematography is breathtaking and yet very neat. The underwater scenes are captured with utmost perfection. Dylan Cole and Ben Procter's production design is very rich and appealing. Bob Buck and Deborah L Scott's costumes are one of a kind as per the requirement. The action is a bit gory in one or two scenes but otherwise, it’s very entertaining. The VFX, as expected, is truly out-of-the-world and many notches higher than what we had seen in AVATAR [2009]. David Brenner, James Cameron, John Refoua and Stephen E Rivkin's editing could have been crisper.

On the whole, AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER rests on spellbinding visuals, entertaining action scenes, never-before-seen scale, clapworthy climax and a strong emotional undercurrent in the storyline due to which it can run riot from East to West, and North to South at the box office. It is also at a huge advantage thanks to the popularity of the first part, extreme curiosity about the film, zero competition and inflated ticket rates. If the word of mouth is strong, it won’t be surprising if it emerges as the biggest Hollywood grosser in India, surpassing the numbers of AVENGERS: ENDGAME [2019].

The sea is our home before our birth and after we die.” Beyond the 3D visual spectacle that Avatar is, something we trust James Cameron to deliver, the franchise’s beauty lies in its underlying spiritual arc and ode to continuity of life. Life finds a way. It evolves no matter the surroundings as love is transformative.
Humans call the Na’vi ‘hostiles and insurgents’, when it is they who forcefully infiltrate and occupy their land. Despite its magical, fictional setting, Avatar is not devoid of socio-political themes. It addresses race, civilisation, takes a strong anti-military stand and makes a plea for environment conservation through its simple story of parents and children. A spectacular climax revolves around parents protecting their children and vice versa.
From lush jungles to the gorgeous reefs… the action shifts from forests to the sea this time around and it’s equally meditative and hypnotic. For over three hours you find yourself immersed in the enchanting world of an oceanic clan (Metkayina) or the reef people who give Sully and his family a refuge from humans. The sequel scores high on action and emotion. One is not compromised for the other. ‘Happiness is simple. The Sullys stay together. This is our biggest weakness and our greatest strength,” says Jake Sully and the story embodies that spirit. The tale isn’t unique per se but the storytelling and visual excellence are otherworldly epic. Mounted on a massive scale, not once do you find yourself wanting to return to the real world.
While the predecessor set the bar high for visual effects 13 years ago, the new film takes it a step further. Like the previous film, the director does not use 3D as a gimmick but uses it artfully to accentuate audience immersion in the world and story. Avatar 2 deserves be watched in IMAX 3D. It is the greatest immersive cinema experience of the year. Go blue!

The world as we know is divided into two parts. The one before Avatar and the one that came after it. James Cameron’s 2009 film is a very important milestone in the history of filmmaking. Not only did Avatar break worldwide box office records, but it also proved that human imagination has no limits and that, with the help of technology, one can bring every vivid dream or visual to life on the big screen. Avatar was that film which left a mark on everyone who watched it. Even for those who didn’t like it or found it too sloppy or preachy, there was no denying the impact of those visual sequences and big action scenes with the Na’vi tribe (blue people).
In 2022, Cameron returns with Avatar: The Way of Water. Like its title, this time around, the story is set against the backdrop of shades of blue. The Sully family is now living on Pandora. Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) have to look out for not just themselves but their extended family, which includes their children Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), Tuk (Trinity Jo-Li Bliss), and Kiri (Sigourney Weaver). There is also a human child, Spider (Jack Champion), who the Sully’s consider their own. Things take a turn for the bad when the ‘sky people’ descend on Pandora and the Sully’s have to leave the lush green landscape of their home and seek refuge in the aquamarine blue reefs which belong to another tribe - the Metkayina, who are water people. Now the Sully family has to not only befriend them but also adapt to a new life and figure out ‘the way of water’.
The first Avatar touched on many themes that dealt with forest conservation and how human greed is killing our planet. The follow up - The way of Water deals with our oceans and marine life. Both movies have a deep-rooted relationship with each other. Cameron, being an activist himself, has weaved in scenes and characters that don’t sound preachy but advocate many important issues that the planet is facing. As an audience watching his vision come to life, you are invested from the very first frame. Even if you are new to the Avatar universe, Cameron’s use of 3D and the visual splendour of every character he creates- the flora and fauna of the forest, the fish, the coral beds and their vibrant hues, all of these elements hypnotise you and suck you into this magical world.
Where Avatar does stumble a bit is in its first half. Cameron introduces us to so many new and old characters that it does get tricky to keep track of who is doing what. Some scenes and sequences are too long and feel ‘showy’. Barring these hiccups, the second half picks pace and takes you deep inside the heart of Pandora. Jacky Sully is now a father who can no longer make any reckless decisions or engage in fights. He puts his family first and that is where the emotional connect comes in. Beneath the layers of visual effects and 3D is the story of this family who you root for. Cameron’s biggest gift has always been his ability to create characters who you champion for. Despite the Titanic’s ice berg movement, it was Jack and Rose’s love story that made the film so iconic. Similarly in Avatar, Cameron has many moments that will have you rooting for the Sully family.
Avatar: The Way of Water comes 13 years after the first, yet when the movie starts you feel like you saw the first part just yesterday. It isn’t perfect, it’s messy but if you surrender to Cameron’s vision and let the 3D experience take the lead you are in for a huge treat ! Avatar: The Way of Water is a terrific follow up to one of the biggest films in cinematic history. Do not miss this one!

Avatar: The Way of Water Review: I was an excited aspiring film journalist when Avatar (2009) was released. I remember dragging my family to the theatres to watch and celebrate James Cameron’s new world, Pandora. I vividly recall also being blown away by the concept, despite its flaws. Now, 13 years later, James Cameron has done it again with Avatar: The Way of Water. However, the flaws are a little more evident.

With a runtime of 192 minutes (3 hours and 12 minutes), Avatar: The Way of Water takes audiences back to the fictional world of Pandora. Set a decade and a half after Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) decides to forgo his life with ‘sky people’ and become a part of the beautiful Na’vi clan. He has come a long way in life. He not only married Ney’tiri (Zoe Saldana) but they also have four children now: Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), Tuk (Trinity Jo-Li Bliss), and an adopted daughter, Kiri (Sigourney Weaver).
While life seems all good and beautiful at first with the sky people nowhere around, the film takes a massive turn within the first half hour by bringing back a troop of sky people led by Stephen Lang’s Colonel Miles Quaritch, who is now somewhat a part of Pandora. This time, he’s got revenge on his mind. His only goal is to watch Jake crumble. Their clash leads Jake, Ney’tiri, and their children to leave the forest-dwelling community and find refuge with the Metkayina Na’vi tribe, led by Cliff Curtis’ Tonowari and Kate Winslet’s Ronal. The forest dwellers now learn the ways of the water while preparing for an inevitable clash with Quaritch’s troop of sky people.

Avatar: The Way of Water comes with massive expectations, considering James Cameron made fans wait for 13 years before he returned to Pandora. The director, who has delivered some of the most memorable cinematic experiences, lives up to visual expectations. Avatar: The Way of Water is far richer and bigger than its 2009 precedent. Cameron plays it smart with both halves, banking on nostalgia in the first half while serenading us with the new world in the second.
He reminds us that he has an imagination like no other as he takes us on a never-before-seen journey of land and water. He takes his leisure time to transit from the woods to the water, thus making full use of the 3-odd hours of the film. Cameron not only uses the underwater world to show a different side of Pandora but also uses it as a poetic tool of storytelling. Cameron asks us to be patient and be a part of the forest dwellers’ learning journey before we dive into the action sequence.

The filmmaker also inevitably gives a nod to Titanic in the climax scene. The only difference was that this time it had Zoe instead of Kate in the frame. While the film provides visual poetry and a bunch of new characters, it sadly doesn’t manage to even things out. Introducing the Metkayina Na’vi tribe and having us invest in their ways of life grows weak in the climax. I am ready to give the benefit of the doubt that we will get to see more of them in the upcoming sequel, Avatar 3, but their treatment left me with several questions. While the film belongs to Jake and his kids, it was disappointing that Cliff Curtis’ Tonowari and Kate Winslet’s Ronal were completely sidelined despite the hype.
The writing of Avatar: The Way of Water could have been better, especially the plot. The film falls short of drama and grandeur when it comes to the premise. The first half could have been shorter or more tightly layered. While Cameron does not shy away from using all the time in the world to revisit the forest and lead us to the waters, it feels like he took way too many eclipses to finally get to the point of the film. While he provides a fulfilling visual experience, you also start looking at your watch, waiting for the point of the film to finally kick in.
The editing also appeared to be weak in most parts of the film. There also seemed to be a disbalance in the pace of the film, considering that Cameron chose to slow things down underwater but suddenly pick up a strangely fast pace for the action scenes.
The biggest win for Cameron with Avatar: The Way of Water is undoubtedly the jaw-dropping cinematography, the impressive VFX, and the music. The actors — Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana — make us forget their human versions altogether. Unfortunately, Kate Winslet was underused, leaving a massive disappointment for fans looking forward to seeing her in the film. As someone who loved Avatar (2009), it did fall short, but it was an experience I wouldn’t have missed for the world.
