Survival films have an undeniable pull — they strip life down to its most primal essence: the will to live. Caught Stealing, adapted by David Hayter from the first book in Charlie Huston’s gritty trilogy, takes that instinct and plunges it headfirst into Darren Aronofsky’s signature world of chaos, paranoia, and emotional disarray. The result is a grim, unpredictable ride that teeters between gripping and exhausting.
Hank Thompson (Austin Butler), once a celebrated baseball prodigy, now tends bar and lives a modest life until a seemingly harmless favour — pet-sitting for a neighbour — thrusts him into a vortex of crime, deceit, and brutality. Aronofsky, known for dismantling the minds and morals of his protagonists, crafts one harrowing scenario after another for Hank. Each wrong turn pushes him deeper into New York’s unforgiving underbelly, leaving viewers torn between empathy and disbelief.
Butler delivers a career-defining performance, oscillating between vulnerability and rage with remarkable authenticity. His physical and emotional unraveling feels painfully real, whether he’s nursing his wounds, fighting back against faceless threats, or simply trying to make sense of the madness engulfing him. Regina King, as Detective Elise Roman, brings a sense of calm authority amid the chaos, grounding the narrative every time she’s on screen. The supporting cast — including Liev Schreiber and Vincent D'Onofrio as gangster brothers the Druckers — complement the film’s intensity with performances that never overreach.
Aronofsky’s direction ensures that discomfort is constant. From the dimly lit bars to bloodied apartments and rain-soaked alleyways, Matthew Libatique’s cinematography mirrors Hank’s descent into despair with kinetic visuals and jittery handheld frames that amplify the tension. The late-’90s Manhattan setting, captured in all its grimy detail, becomes a character in itself — hostile, claustrophobic, and relentlessly alive. Rob Simonsen and Idles’ pulsing soundtrack perfectly underscores this chaos, fusing anxiety and adrenaline into every frame.
Despite its many strengths, Caught Stealing falters slightly in cohesion. For all its visceral urgency and sharp moments, something feels missing — perhaps a deeper emotional anchor or a more profound narrative payoff. It’s a film that keeps your heart racing but rarely lets it rest.
Ultimately, Caught Stealing belongs to Austin Butler. His portrayal of Hank Thompson elevates this gritty, chaotic thriller into something raw and memorable. It may not rank among Aronofsky’s most profound works, but it’s an engrossing, unpredictable watch that keeps you invested till the end — a messy, adrenaline-charged portrait of survival in its purest form.

After one look at the very pretty and very busted Austin Butler, a wise grandmother of the kind every mobster has puttering away happily in the kitchen says: “If you can’t bite, don’t show your teeth.”

Maybe Darren Aronofsky should have paid attention. The latest film by the director who revels in exploring physical pain (Black Swan) packs a lot of pearly whites (Butler and Kravitz’s, for starters) and plenty of bark. But when it comes to bites, a few snacky bits is all you get.

Based on a 2004 novel by Charlie Huston, who has also done the screenplay, Caught Stealing is meant to be the kind of comedic crime thriller where an innocent bystander gets sucked into a vortex of blood and gore, and has the better of them all.
The setting is late 1990s New York, Lower East Side. Rudy Giuliani is the mayor, and his high-decibel campaign to clean up the city, of gangs, graffiti or garbage, is clearly not going great.
Russ, turns out, has left Hank with not just a cat but two separate gangs baying for blood. Since Russ is absent, they go after Hank, and indicate they mean business by beating him enough to leave him without a kidney at their first meeting. If one group comprises generic East Europeans, most likely Russians that is, the other comprises two Orthodox Jew brothers (Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio).

Roman (Regina King) is a police officer who answers Hank’s call for help and knows what is going down with him way too well.

Caught Stealing needed to be much funnier than it is, have much more of the Jew brothers than it does, use Kravitz better than it criminally decides not to, and cut back on lingering shots of the cat and obsessive references to baseball. You kind of sympathise with Russ when, after yet another sample of Hank’s reference to baseball, he says: “Imagine if I kept talking to you about the Premier League. How would you like it?”

We get that baseball is meant to stand in for all that is home and ‘what could have been’ for Hank, but it is clear even the first time that Aronofsky brings it around. And it only gets irritating as he keeps falling back to it. Even the unduly kind Yvonne tells Hank to snap out of it.

He has won several accolades for his performances in movies like the Scream trilogy, Phantoms, The Sum of All Fears, The Omen, X Men Origins: Wolverine, Salt and Spotlight. He attended London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Hampshire College and graduated with a Master's degree from the Yale School of Drama in 1992. Liev is the half brother of actor Pablo Schreiber.
