Anime fans are still reeling from the visual spectacle of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Infinity Castle. Arriving close on its heels, the Japanese animated dark fantasy action film, based on Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga series ChainsawMan, delivers another breathtaking experience, which combines top-notch animation, riveting action, and a layered narrative. The film is also a direct sequel to the first season of the anime television series. Many theatrical releases that are cut from series arcs or sequels skip the story’s background, which can detract from the experience. Chainsaw Man also does the same, though the makers manage to make the narrative work as a gripping standalone.
For the uninitiated: Denji, working as a Devil Hunter to pay off his late father’s debt, is betrayed and killed by the yakuza (an organised crime syndicate). In his dying moments, his loyal chainsaw-powered devil-dog, Pochita, saves his master by fusing with him to create Chainsaw Man. What follows in this movie is a brutal war between devils, hunters, and other enemies, with Reze’s entrance altering the course of Denji’s fate.
True to its dark fantasy roots, the film doesn’t shy away from unsettling imagery. From tongues being bitten off to the Bomb Devil blowing her own head apart, the gore is blatant. With twists aplenty, the film also keeps the audience on the edge of their seats frequently.
What makes Chainsaw Man truly stand out, however, is how it balances tones. There’s humour in Denji’s awkward teenage interactions, tender romance in fleeting moments with Reze, and adrenaline-fueled battles that erupt with visceral intensity. Composer Kensuke Ushio amplifies every emotion with tracks like Typhoon Devil and the operatic Bomb. The set pieces are dazzling—from reflections glistening in raindrops to fireworks illuminating the night sky during Denji and Reze’s kiss, or a low-angle shot of an airplane as Bomb Devil brutally defeats a nemesis. The film’s style shifts, too. It begins with a hand-drawn comic book-inspired charm before plunging into darker, bloodier territory.
The movie’s voice cast is also excellent: Kikunosuke Toya embodies Denji as a boy torn between Makima (Tomori Kusunoki) and Reze and later as the Chainsaw Man perfectly. Natsuki Hanae shines as Beam, the eccentric shark devil who idolises Denji. Reina Ueda seamlessly transitions Reze from love-struck innocence to a more formidable presence, while Fairouz Ai’s Power delivers bursts of selfish, chaotic energy.
Chainsaw Man is more than just another action-packed anime spectacle. It’s a blend of razor-sharp visuals, emotional storytelling, and unflinching darkness. For those who crave breathtaking animation, intense battles, and a narrative with real depth, this film is a must-watch, especially on the big screen for the full impact.
