For horror movie buffs, Conjuring Kannappan has a mouth-wateringly inventive premise. In every horror movie, characters get trapped in a place in the real world, but here, they get trapped in a dream world. Until they wake up, they will have to deal with the ghosts in the place. And whatever fate befalls them in that world will also reflect in the real world as well!
The film's protagonist is Kannappan or KP (Sathish), a game designer who is desperate for work. His family includes his retired father Anjanenjan (VTV Ganesh), mother Lakshmi (Saranya Ponvannnan), a wannabe YouTuber, and good-for-nothing uncle Sekar (Namo Narayanan). When he stumbles upon a mysterious object, a cursed dream catcher, he accidentally becomes its victim. And the device transports him to a palatial mansion in 1930 haunted by two British ghosts. While he can get away from there whenever he wakes up in the real world, whatever happens to him there will also leave a mark on him. So, if he does there, he will die here, too!
Director Selvin Raj Xavier uses this exciting premise to build a horror comedy using a bunch of comic performers who elevate even the clichéd moments with their well-timed quips. In fact, they are the major strengths of the film. In addition to the above mentioned actors, we also have Redin Kingsley as a struggling psychiatrist, and Anandaraj as a local rowdy with a quirky name - Devil Armstrong - who is after the hero for money. On the other hand, we have Nasser and Regina Cassandra playing exorcists with a very straight face.
As each or these characters become victims of the device, they all end up in the dream world, where they will have to try and get a key that will help them break the spell. The director treats this as an equal parts horror and comedy film. The comedy works, though it could have been even quirkier, but the horror comes across as rather generic - a series of jump scares that stop being scary after the third or fourth instance. There are times when it feels like the filmmaker was so excited by the premise that he decided to settle for whatever idea popped up first when it comes to scripting the individual scenes. This is why the film remains a entertaining diversion that doesn't stick with us long after the film ends.
