 In Hindi cinema, stories centred on elderly characters often fall into familiar traps — either reducing them to comic relief or glorifying them as self-sacrificing figures. Daadi Ki Shaadi tries to move beyond these stereotypes by exploring loneliness, companionship, and emotional neglect in old age through the framework of a family dramedy. The premise is both refreshing and socially relevant, offering fertile ground for humour, emotional conflict, and commentary on changing family dynamics. While the film begins on a promising note with warmth and sincerity, it eventually loses momentum because of an overstretched screenplay and uneven writing, resulting in a film that remains mildly engaging rather than truly memorable.
Set against the serene backdrop of Shimla, the film revolves around Vimla Ahuja (Neetu Kapoor), a widowed matriarch who shocks her family after an accidental social media announcement about her upcoming marriage goes viral. The revelation creates panic within the household and threatens the wedding plans of her granddaughter Kanika, aka Kannu (Sadia Khateeb). As confusion, embarrassment, and emotional confrontations take over the Ahuja family, Kannu’s fiancé Tony Kalra (Kapil Sharma) becomes the unlikely mediator trying to reunite the fractured family while supporting Vimla’s decision.
Director Ashish R. Mohan deserves credit for treating the subject with sensitivity instead of turning it into outright mockery. At its core, the film is less about remarriage and more about the emotional invisibility elderly parents often experience once children become consumed by their own routines and responsibilities. The idea that companionship and emotional support remain equally important in old age gives the narrative its strongest emotional moments.
The first half works well because of its lively humour and relatable family dynamics. The chaos surrounding Vimla’s remarriage announcement creates several entertaining moments, especially during the clashes between the Ahuja and Kalra families. However, the second half loses momentum under repetitive emotional conflicts and excessive detours. At nearly 150 minutes, the film feels overstretched, with several scenes repeating the same emotional beats without adding depth.
The writing also weakens the film’s impact. Despite a strong central idea, the dialogues rarely leave a lasting impression. Emotional scenes often feel underwritten, while certain comic moments fail to land effectively. The film constantly shifts between humour and sentiment, but these transitions are not always smooth. Technically, too, the film feels inconsistent, with shaky camerawork and excessive close-ups becoming distracting rather than immersive.
Despite its flaws, the film stays afloat largely because of its performances. Neetu Kapoor is the emotional anchor, bringing warmth, grace, and quiet vulnerability to Vimla. Her performance beautifully captures the quiet loneliness hidden beneath a cheerful exterior. Kapil Sharma contributes significantly with his natural comic timing and easy screen presence. His character Tony brings energy to the narrative, and his one-liners genuinely work. Sadia Khateeb performs confidently, though her character remains confined to a predictable arc that leaves little room for surprise.
R. Sarath Kumar lends quiet dignity to Col. Theeran Devrajan, while Yograj Singh adds flavour as Tony’s outspoken father. Riddhima Kapoor makes a confident screen debut as Vimla’s daughter, bringing natural ease and understated warmth to her role, while Deepak Dutta and Jitender Hooda convincingly portray sons struggling to accept their mother’s unconventional decision.
Visually, the film benefits greatly from Shimla’s scenic backdrop. The snow-covered mountains, narrow lanes, and cosy homes complement the film’s soft emotional tone beautifully. Unfortunately, the music leaves little impact apart from the novelty of watching Neetu Kapoor dance onscreen again.
Daadi Ki Shaadi carries an important message about acceptance, companionship, and the emotional neglect of the elderly. It has sincerity, warmth, and a few genuinely touching moments. But despite its progressive premise and strong performances, the film never fully realises its potential because of its sluggish pacing and inconsistent writing. What could have been a sharp, memorable family dramedy settles instead for being an average family entertainer.

Neetu Kapoor is undoubtedly the heart of the film. The veteran actress brings elegance, warmth, and emotional honesty to the role, making you invest in her character’s unconventional journey. She balances comedy and vulnerability naturally, carrying much of the film’s emotional weight. The veteran actress lit up the screen and it was hard to look at anyone else around her.

It was especially refreshing to watch when Neetu Kapoor played the lighter aspects of her character. She draws you in in the more vulnerable scenes, and it is a reminder of why she is a superstar. Much of the film’s emotional impact rests on her ability to balance vulnerability with mischievous charm- and she pulls it off effortlessly.

Kapil Sharma plays a pleasantly restrained version of his TV avatar, but his acting skills still need more polishing. At 6 films old, the actor should have outshone the comedian on the big screen. Nonetheless, Kapil Sharma delivers one of his better performances in Daadi Ki Shaadi. While his emotional scenes feel slightly off, his shift from slapstick to a more refined comedic avatar is a welcome effort.
One of the biggest talking points about the film is that it marks Riddhima Kapoor Sahni’s acting debut. At 45, she is the oldest Kapoor to debut, and with this age and legacy comes a confidence that shows on screen. While naturally inexperienced in some scenes, she brings sincerity to her performance.

While we had witnessed a chirpier Riddhima in Fabulous Lives Vs Bollywood Wives, her more serious scenes in this film give her a chance to show off her talent. This she does, to an extent. Riddhima’s natural chemistry with Neetu Kapoor translates well on screen, and a particular scene in which she tells her future step-dad that he cannot replace her father is a highlight. It’s hard not to wonder about their real-life mother-daughter dynamic.

What Works

Neetu Kapoor’s graceful performance, Kapil Sharma’s effort, and the novelty of Riddhima Kapoor Sahni’s debut make the film worth watching for audiences craving wholesome entertainment over spectacle-heavy blockbusters. It is a warm, sentimental, and chaotic film designed for family viewing. It may not offer major surprises, but it succeeds in creating a feel-good atmosphere.
Still, for audiences craving clean, family-oriented entertainment in an era dominated by action spectacles and dark thrillers, Daadi Ki Shaadi offers a refreshing change of pace. While occasionally over-the-top, the film comes off mostly sincere.


Daadi Ki Shaadi is the new film Bollywood has to offer fans in cinemas this week. It’s a heartfelt comedy-cum-drama about the character of Neetu Kapoor who wishes to get married. It has nothing to do with the 2019 Mexican comedy Grandma’s Wedding despite the similar titles. It’s always refreshing to see seasoned actors take centre stage and when stories and narratives are woven around them.
It happened with the 2001 Malayalam comedy Ishtam and Kapoor’s own 2022 _Jug Jugg Jeey_o. The clincher is the casting of Riddhima Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor’s real-life daughter. When Kajol made her big Bollywood debut with Bekhudi in 1992, Tanuja teamed up with director Rahul Rawail to play her on-screen mother too.
And then there’s Kapil Sharma, who yearns to prove there’s more to him than hysterical comedy and stand-up. Sharma displays a restrained sense of humour and his body language is in complete control. Sadia Khateeb of The Diplomat fame lets loose this time around she completely submits herself with the froth of the story. There is something very heartfelt about the way Daadi Ki Shaadi has been shot and performed. Even when the situation demands hysteria, every actor chooses to hold his horses. It is definitely not easy to strike that balance. The title reveals a lot about the plot. There is a twist in the tale as well. Director Ashish R Mohan, who made _Khiladi 786_ and Welcome To Karachi, uses the tool of social media to get the story going. One mishap and everything changes for the family.
Mohan teams up with writers Bunty Rathore and Saahil S Sharma to create a narrative that shows how age will always be a number. Neetu Kapoor wishes to get married and her family is obviously shocked and not entirely pleased. It’s not going to be a cakewalk to convince them how and why she deserves a life she wants to have. There are schemes and situations that keep you engaged and hooked. Neetu Kapoor is still as lively as refreshing to watch, or maybe even more. She was fabulous in Jug Jugg Jeeyo and appropriately amusing in Do Dooni Chaar. In Daadi Ki Shaadi, she looks ethereal and effervescent. Riddhima’s debut, as stated above, is an innovative casting choice. And then there’s Yograj Singh.
Singh reminds you of the Dara Singh character from _Jab We Met_- The fierce and ferocious patriarch of the family who better not be scorned. Singh brings an intimidating aura to his screen presence almost replicating his real life demeanor. And then he doesn’t forget to crack a few jokes as well, à la Singh Is Bliing. And then comes Kapil Sharma. This isn’t Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon. So there’s no room for farcical comedy. Daadi Ki Shaadi is a film that relies more on situations than slapstick. It brings a smile to your face once it ends and even when the proceedings are going on. The film also proves why veterans will never lose their mojo if you allow them to have their cake and eat it too. Age will always be a number.
