Luv Ranjan's story is original, especially the various twists and turns. At the same time, they carry his trademark stamp. Tarun Jain and Luv Ranjan's screenplay is full of humour and drama in adequate doses, though the writing gets far-fetched in the second half. Tarun Jain and Luv Ranjan's dialogues are one of the pillars of the film. Certain references to previous films, TV shows etc. will bring the house down.

Anshul Sharma's direction is entertaining. He neatly takes the franchise forward and ensures that the tonality of the sequel is the same as part 1. Moreover, the film never drags or slows down. Something or the other is happening in every scene. In fact, there are no songs in the first half. Also, usually, the pre-interval portion is reserved for fun while the drama takes centre stage later on. But in DE DE PYAAR DE 2, the first half is a mix of comedy and confrontation, and it makes for a great watch. The intermission point is interesting. Post-interval, the madness goes many notches higher once Adi (Meezaan Jafri) enters the narrative. The conversation between Ashish and Rakesh is memorable.

On the flipside, the second half is too far-fetched. There’s no doubt that the twist is unexpected and the makers attempted to give the audience a different experience. At the same time, it’ll leave viewers divided – while some might be impressed, the other half will find it outright silly. The film gets better in the finale, but even this part might have its share of adversaries. The other weak point is music. A film like this ought to have chartbuster songs.
Ajay Devgn is dependable as always. Though his screen time is comparatively less, he makes his presence felt from start to finish. In some scenes, he uses his eyes to do the talking and its quite impressive. R Madhavan rocks the show. Only a seasoned actor like him could have essayed the role with such perfection. Rakul Preet Singh dominates some key scenes. She looks stunning and delivers one of her best or arguably the best performance of her career. Meezaan Jafri also gives his career-best act. Gautami Kapoor lends able support. Jaaved Jaaferi (Ronak) is too good and raises laughs. Ishita Dutta has a crucial role in the first half and does well. Tarun Gahlot gets no scope. Suhasini Mulay (Nani) steals the show with just one scene. Gracy Goswami (Tia) and Anvesha Vij (Dia) are okay. Ankur Nayyar (Babbi) is wasted.
Songs won't have a long shelf life but are well-woven. 'Raat Bhar' is the best of the lot followed by 'Baabul Ve'. '3 Shaukk' and 'Aakhri Salaam' are passable. 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom' appears in the end credits. Hitesh Sonik's background score adds to the commercial feel. Sudhir K Chaudhary's cinematography is satisfactory. Samidha Wangnoo's costumes are glamorous, especially the ones worn by Rakul. Sumit Basu and Manini Mishra's production design is theatrical. Chetan M Solanki's editing is slick.
On the whole, DE DE PYAAR DE 2 impresses with its compelling performances, relatable narrative, and an entertaining fusion of humour and drama. At the box office, the film possesses strong prospects of sustaining and expanding its run over the weekend and thereafter, particularly if favourable word of mouth regarding its emotional quotient and comedic moments gains momentum.

The sequel to De De Pyaar De revisits its familiar theme — love across generations — but this time from the opposite end of the spectrum. After seeking validation from his estranged wife (Tabu) and family, middle-aged Ashish Mehra (Ajay Devgn) must now win over the parents of his much younger girlfriend, Ayesha (Rakul Preet Singh). The twist lies in the irony: Ayesha’s parents, Rakesh and Anju (R. Madhavan and Gautami Kapoor), are nearly Ashish’s age, setting the stage for a fresh round of awkward humour, emotional tension, and social commentary.
The film’s first half plays out with a breezy charm, echoing the tone of the 2019 original. Ayesha’s family believes they are modern and progressive — “age is just a number,” they claim — until confronted with the reality of their daughter’s middle-aged suitor. These moments of hypocrisy and generational discomfort are where the film finds its sharpest humour. The writing, by Luv Ranjan and Tarun Jain, works best when it relies on situational comedy rather than the easy route of slapstick jokes.
Ajay Devgn delivers a self-aware and effortlessly cool performance. He embraces the jokes about his age, turning them into a source of humour and humility. Even when called buddha or uncle repeatedly, Devgn wears it like a badge of honour, reminding the audience why he still commands screen presence. Rakul Preet Singh brings energy and confidence, complementing Devgn’s understated charm. However, their spark is dimmer this time, perhaps because the writing doesn’t give their relationship enough emotional depth.
R. Madhavan, as Ayesha’s father, is perfectly cast. His understated performance lends weight and warmth to the narrative, while his scenes with Devgn add emotional grounding to the otherwise frothy narrative. Gautami Kapoor, as the composed and supportive mother, adds grace, even if her role is underwritten. Ishita Dutta, playing Ayesha’s outspoken bhabhi, brings energy but occasionally slips into loudness. Meezaan Jafri’s cameo as the “ideal match” for Ayesha injects humour and nostalgia, especially with his recreation of Devgn’s iconic Phool Aur Kaante split-entry — a cheeky nod that earns a few whistles. Javed Jafferi, as Ashish’s therapist and confidant, steals every scene he’s in with impeccable comic timing.
Director Anshul Sharma keeps the tone breezy and engaging, relying on situational humour and family dynamics rather than moralising. However, DDPD2often drifts, losing pace and purpose as it juggles between comedy, emotion, and social commentary. The uneven tone and sluggish stretches dilute its impact, even though flashes of wit and warmth shine through. Sharma manages to wrap it up on a grounded, feel-good note, but the film never quite finds the emotional depth or sharpness it aims for.
Musically, the film hits the right notes. Tracks like 3 Shaukk (a peppy rework of Karan Aujla’s White Brown Black) and Jhoom Sharaabi (Yo Yo Honey Singh’s energetic spin on Azim Naza’s qawwali) are catchy and well-placed.
De De Pyaar De 2 doesn’t reinvent the formula — it merely updates it with wit, charm, and maturity. Despite its uneven tone and missing spark, the film remains an enjoyable, light-hearted sequel that reminds us love can defy age, but not always logic.

"We are educated, progressive people. Hum modern log hain," is a catchphrase that forms the spine of De De Pyaar De 2, a rom-com that does an impressive job of tackling uncomfortable conversations around relationships in the modern era. The fact that the film doesn't treat women characters as trophies or infantilises them is a welcome change in a movie that also has Luv Ranjan as one of the producers.

R Madhavan and Gautami Kapoor play the concerned but 'well-meaning' parents of Rakul Preet Singh's headstrong Ayesha, who has decided to marry her mature live-in boyfriend of 6 months, Ashish - a divorced man with two grown-up children, played by Ajay Devgn.

Ayesha's parents are college sweethearts -- Rakesh and Anu -- who are (proudly) sexually active and so much in sync after 31 years of marriage that they call each other 'Rajji,' as opposed to the usual (pukes) 'honey' or 'baby'.

They were okay with Ayesha's partner being an older and divorced man, as they are not just parents to this 25-year-old independent woman but also friends who encourage open and honest conversations. They are doting parents-in-law to their daughter-in-law Kittu, played by the genial Ishita Dutta, whose presence in the film reminds you of the Drishyam franchise, especially when she shares the screen with Ajay Devgn.
But the mask of the Rajjis' progressive and modern nature is ripped off when they find out that Ashish is, in fact, older than her own father. R Madhavan is the scene stealer as the jealous, overbearing, and egotistical father who believes 'Papa knows best' and calls Ashish 'Shaitan' (wink wink).

It's like a full-circle moment for R Madhavan, who was on the other side of the fence years ago when he starred as the goofy South Indian son-in-law to the late Satish Shah's irritable Punjabi patriarch in the 1997 popular TV show Ghar Jamai.

De De Pyaar De 2 surprisingly has very few scenes featuring Ajay Devgn. We're not sure if it was by design or default, but the film works pretty well on its own, with other actors - including real-life father-son duo Jaaved Jaaferi and Meezaan Jaaferi - doing the heavy lifting.

As Ashish, Ajay Devgn plays the perfect mature older guy who gets Ayesha's goat as he doesn't pull out all stops to ensure they get married. His BFF Ronak (Jaaved Jaaferi) implores him to be a sachha aashiq, not an accha aashiq.

But we see Ashish making an effort to impress Ayesha's parents. After he cooks a Punjabi breakfast of aloo ki sabzi, kale chane, puri, and halwa, Ashish and the male Rajji end up bonding over blood pressure control medicines in quite a funny scene.

Age is the elephant in the room, a topic that De De Pyaar De 2 doesn't brush under the carpet. It takes it head-on.

The idea that older people have a bad memory is blown into smithereens when Ayesha's nani, played by the ever-graceful and pitch-perfect Suhasini Mulay, schools Ashish, who dared to even question hers.

Grandchildren's dates of birth, times of birth, who got married when, what they were doing when one of the grandchildren was born, and how much the Sri Lankan great Arjuna Ranatunga scored in that cricket match that they were watching at the hospital-she tells him all this, and more, and how. "Yaadasht pe nahin jaana tha..." she snarls.

It's also a coming-of-age film for producer Luv Ranjan, who has been (infamously) synonymous with all-boys-club films like the Pyaar Ka Punchnama franchise. In De De Pyaar De 2, director Anshul Sharma does a good job of making a rom-com that doesn't degrade women at the cost of comedy.

Here, women have a voice-and not just in the drab, in-your-face, prove-a-point manner. For example, Rakul Preet Singh's Ayesha is no bechari and doesn't wait to be manipulated or tricked.

While she does shout that she needs no saving and is not a child, she isn't afraid to call a spade a spade, whether it's her parents or partner. She is no one's puppet and doesn't live her life that way. A father is a daughter's first love, but a daughter is a father's last love, and yet no father has the right to cheat his daughter.

In what is mostly an entertaining watch, De De Pyaar De 2 explores themes of ageism, double standards, emotional blackmail, and ingrained patriarchy. So much for treating the audience with respect and not infantilizing them. Wish they hadn't bleeped out the expletives. We all lip-read; we know a cuss word when we "see" it.

There are some of those hee-hee I-see-what-you-did-there family jokes involving Kajol, Shah Rukh Khan, and drawing pop culture references from Phool Aur Kaante, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Singham, and Boogie Woogie that elicit giggles here and there.

Six years after Ajay Devgn’s Aashish and Rakul Preet Singh’s Ayesha first fell in love, the couple now returns to screens on November 14 with a new challenge. This time, they need to convince Ayesha’s parents that they are right for one another despite their glaring age gap. However, the only thing I am convinced of is that the sequel falls short of the original film.

The film begins with a comedic flashback narrated by Jaaved Jaaferi, who, in all his scenes, has outshone every other actor in the film. The story then takes us from London to Chandigarh, where Rakul’s Ayesha returns home for her sister-in-law’s delivery, as it’s a perfect opportunity for her to tell her parents about her 51-year-old boyfriend and soften the blow amid the celebration.
We are then introduced to R Madhavan and Gautami Kapoor, who are Ayesha’s “educated, progressive and modern" parents. R Madhavan plays a father who wants to be friends with his children. He is a doting father-in-law, a loving husband and inarguably a much better performer than our leading hero.
Much like Jaaved Jaaferi, R Madhavan steals every frame and aces all emotions of his character. Whether it’s an outright comedy scene or an emotional meltdown, Madhavan reminds us of his stellar acting chops. Gautami Kapoor complements him flawlessly, and their pairing works well on screen, perhaps even better than Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh.

Madhavan and Kapoor’s modernity is challenged when they learn that their daughter wants to marry a man who is barely two years their junior. They are faced with the age-old dilemma: log kya kahenge? What follows is a comedic battle of wits between father and daughter. While the ‘perfect dad’ now tries to manipulate his daughter into marrying a young Meezan Jaaferi, the ‘outspoken girl’ ploys a charade to convince her father otherwise.

Meezan Jaaferi doesn’t do much in the film, except aid Jaaved Jaaferi in cracking meta jokes about his son. However, he did come across as someone with potential to give a better performance in a better film. Rakul Preet Singh brings a certain charm to the more light-hearted scenes. However, her emotional breakdowns, especially the one with Madhavan in the middle of a dance sequence, seemed laughable.
Ajay Devgn is well, Ajay Devgn. He gave a tolerable performance in film, except for some of his comedy scenes with Jaaved Jaaferi. While I do believe in watching certain films just for the sake of the experience, without looking for logic and without expecting stellar performances, these factors cannot be overlooked if I had a frown during most of the film.

When De De Pyaar De was released in 2019, it came as a surprise and managed to impress most people. The concept was intriguing, and the narrative made the film an interesting watch, despite some flawed performances. While De De Pyaar 2 gives you hope in the beginning, the film eventually succumbs to half-baked writing. Some jokes land quite well, but that’s about the only thing that works. One might enjoy watching the film once for the jokes and Jaaved and Madhavan’s performances. However, it didn’t recreate the recall value of the original

Back in 2019, when De De Pyaar De arrived in cinemas, the breezy subject, which explored a modern take on relationships, garnered love from the audience for its relevant subject, which was smoothly blended with humour. After six years, Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh are back to level up the chaos and fun quotient in De De Pyaar De 2 with R. Madhavan adding the spice to the narrative. So, like its prequel, will DDPD 2 strike a chord with the cinegoers? Let’s find out…
_De De Pyaar De 2_ begins from where the prequel concluded, after Ashish’s (Ajay Devgn) ex-wife and parents approve his relationship with Aisha (Rakul Preet Singh), the couple now needs the permission of the latter’s family.
Aisha is visiting her family as her sister-in-law, Kittu (Ishita Dutta), is expecting a baby, and she plans to reveal her relationship with Ashish to his mom, Anju (Gautami Kapoor) and Rakesh (R. Madhavan) during the happy moment when they will become grandparents. However, due to Kittu’s slip of tongue, Rakesh and Anju come to know about Ashish.


Assuring that they have modern and progressive thoughts, divorce is not a stigma for them, and age is just a number; they tell Aisha to call Ashish for a meeting. However, as soon as they see that he is visibly old, Rakesh and Anju ask Aisha about his age.

While Aisha tries to dodge questions and hides his age, Rakesh comes to know that he is 25 years older than his daughter, and as parents, he and Anju are not able to digest this relationship. While they can’t outright reject Ashish and Aisha’s relationship, Rakesh makes a plan by calling Aisha’s childhood friend Adi (Meezaan) to woo and win her. Will they succeed in this vicious plan?
Well, just like the first part, DDPD 2 majorly works because of the smooth blend of humour and chaos with a tadka of family drama, which is more fun than being dramatic. Director Anshul Sharma impresses with his storytelling and makes this relevant tale entertaining and a breezy watch. While he will make you believe the characters are problematic, Sharma smartly adds twists to make you cheer, smile and laugh. The meta jokes and hilarious dialogues amplify the viewing experience.

Talking about the performances, Ajay Devgn is subtle and impactful as he reprises Ashish, while Rakul gets the chance to show her acting mettle with a superb character arc, but it’s R. Madhavan, who has stolen the show with his superlative act as Rakesh and his performance will find relevance and applause among the fathers of girls. Gautami and Ishita, too, played their roles to the T. While Jaaved won the hearts with his witty one-liners, Meezaan impressed with his charm and onscreen charisma.
On the whole, De De Pyaar De 2 is a perfect blend of chaos, humour and entertainment.
